Hey ExPo folks

I currently have a 91 Toy truck single cab 4x4.. though I love it, I have to sell it cause I am to big, I am 6'3" and the single cab is not enough:(
Anyway, I lived in Germany for 18 years, know Land Rovers, know what they can do from Camel Trophy's and know how bad they reputation is state side.
I will look for a new rig to purchase soon ( probably within the next 4 months ) and just wanted some input as far as the LR's go. how reliable are they, what is the one to buy?
I love the looks of them, and their capability.

Let me know if my post made any sense.

Phil - just a thought, but at 5'10" I remember having issues with how low the windshield was in my '95 discovery. Made it very hard to see stoplights and street signs. Loved the vehicle and just almost bought another one, but this is something that would only be made worse by your extra half foot.

As with any used vehicle purhcase, buying a well cared for example is key. Find one with a solid maintenace history and get a good PPI. Search around on here, there are quite a few threads about purchasing a Land Rover.

Post up pictures when you get one!

An '04 Discovery II would be a great way to go. They can still be found with low miles and a warranty. The price is still down from the gas price debacle a few months ago.

Try one out and see if your height works with it.

thanks for all the responses..

I didn't think that LR suffers from the same problems as so many other cars I drove lol.. Figured, seeing how the Brit's are tall, that it would be made to hold my tall MMM lol. Oh well, I will let you guys know how it goes.

im 6'4", and the defender LR's fit tight. they remind me of vehicles designed in the 60's. small cockpit in relation to size. its one of the straws that finally pushed the sale of my d110. leaning towards the middle of the truck bowlegged for 4 hours gets tiring.

Well I'm 6ft 5 and I've had my 300 TDI 110 for about 10 years now, 2 V8 Discos, 2 V8 Rangies. Height is not an issue in the Discos or Rangies. On the Defender it can be. The station wagons will be fine, the hardtops are okay but you need to modify the metal behind the seat. The only thing that will give you any real problem is a single cab because short of major modification to extend the cab, there isn't any simple option to get more room. Anyway I'm fine with my 110 fine, I've driven it round Aus, shipped it to the UK, drove it trans africa Uk to Cape Town, driven it round large parts of Europe. Can quite happily drive on 10+ hour days without feeling cramped. That said, it doesn't have as much a space as other 4x4s.

Hi Toby,

I can second your opinion of the driving position of a Defender - it can be made quite decent if the seats slide back far enough. At 6'5, I'd imagine you have them going back quite a bit! (Eventually you're so far back the B-pillar obstructs your view when you look through the side window :))

Rgds,

Michael (Groves)

P.S. I'm guessing from your travels that you're Matt's father? I think we've met before (with Chris Scott, perhaps)?

I am 6' 1" and have no issues with the leg room. I installed the MUDD seat rail extenders from Expedition Exchange and it gave me about 4 more inches which made a huge difference! It did raise me about a half inch in the seat which worked for me since I have a tire mounted on the bonnet.

I believe these can be ordered for the Discos as well.

It is an easy fix.

A seat lowering bracket that lowers the seat 1-2" can do wonders for the seating position--even with your current Toyota. I suggest at least trying that instead of spending a lot of money.

It does not matter how tall or how short you are. To own a Land Rover, you must have the love. If you do not have the love, you'll find the excuse to hate it.

Likewise, you cannot justify buying a Land Rover because of your height.
