Is this jerry can any good?

A co-worker has an older US 5 gal jerry can that he brought to work for me.
The closest picture I could find is off a hobby site lol:

It would be the style of the one on the right, that flip-down lid.
It doesn't feel that tight though, so the gasket might be gone, and he has no spout.
Can you still get spouts for this style?

No problem. It's still a cool can to have. It should have a food grade liner in it, porcelein (sp?) I think. The seal is cork if I remember correct. Unfortunately most of them have been used by Bubba as a gas can which wrecks it's use as a safe water can without relining it. Does it have a date stamp on it?

You do realize that those are miniature plastic toys in that picture, right? :)

Your co-worker probably has an old-style NATO can. Those are slowly being phased out. You used to be able to get spare gaskets and spouts for them. But now, it's pretty much impossible.

I bought a brand new NATO can last year from a Land Rover store. And I still have a couple of spouts that I bought a few years ago from Cheaper Than Dirt. So I'll be good for a little while.

OK, I should've said old NATO-style can. Not an actual can made for NATO, but a can made with NATO features.

I understand what you meant, not a issue of verbage, but what I'm getting at is if the can has US stamped in it it's neither a NATO can or a copy. The can he showed the picture of is a US can made to carry water, not even close to being a NATO\Wedco can. Don't want him to get the can he has confused with a Wedco.

I will post a link to some cans that I just bought. They are Swiss and are in really good condition for surplus. I sanded them down, slapped a few coats of rattle can and some undercoat on the bottom and they look darn near like new. Only downside...for some is that they are not Carb compliant but I am happy about that.:wings: :)

The picture in his link???? Like I said before, those cans are plastic model pieces, about a inch tall. Those are NOT real life-sized cans.

Yes, I have read his post also.....We all understand that. The plastic piece that he took a picture of is a model of a US water can, not a NATO style can. If the real life can looks like the model then it too is a US water can and not a NATO style can. Is that better? My goodness.....

T.A.B., If your coworker is looking to get rid of it and you don't want it I would be interested in it. While they aren't rare, you don't come across one everyday either. If the date is right it would be a good addition to my WWII trailer.

there are many fine NATO cans available through Cheaper than Dirt, Sportsmans Guide and others online....pictures you showed are for toys but thinking you knew that already.

I have both Blitz cans and Wedco.... I used the Blitz cans (2 fuel, 1 water) mounted on my roof rack on overland trip from Charleston SC to Ouray CO last year...and then spent 10 days up to 13,000+ feet with never a leak or issue. Made return trip through Continental Divide again and through 100* heat and then back to South Carolina...still never a leak. Poured the fuel into my tank instead of stopping at station when I got home and very pleased...

The Wedco have the familiar cam locking action...on the models no longer allowed...LOL. Funny thing is they said the new design captures more fumes...but you spill more on ground trying to pour with them...so where is the benefit. LOL

I was still able to find the old style BLITZ cans at Northern Tool and bought a few Wedco from a Briggs and Stratton dealer....by now the NATO might be all you can still get unless you find a few in a store that have not been sold yet.
