It's pretty much done!

Of course you'll see it Moab! Otherwise you might not see me!!

Scott, it was indeed fun sharing thoughts, ideas, food and drink with you while you were in town! I don't know abotu that God thing though.. I've been pushing it so much that I feel as if I've been run over by a bus!

So, why did you decide on the TD5? I was thinking about putting one in my D2, seems it would be the simplest swap since factory parts should be available.

But most people suggest the simpler TD200/300's would be better, even for my D2?

Care to go into details on the process? Where'd you get the engine, what did you do with mechanicals and electricals?

Forget sending images, send me the D1 with the TD5 and I'll take photos for you! (and I'll take it for a test drive too to get some action shots) :hehe:

Keith,

I'm sorry I doubted you when you said you'd have it done before the Moab Rally. You just didn't clarify which one. :shakin:

Seriously though, congrats on finishing it up. That's going to be a SWEET rig.

What are the specs on the TD5? The simple fact that it's a diesel makes me drool near instantly... Plus from teh specs I'm reading, this is one cool Disco to say the least.

Cheers

Dave

EDIT: Never mind I've found the specs, looks like a cool little motor.

The TD5 seemed like an interesting choice. Based on the legalities of stuffing a Diesel in the truck I had few options. Plus this one was a good price.
122BHP and 260ish ft pounds of torque at reasonable RPM's plus good fuel economy, that and I am not a fan of the old Buick V8.

It's a tight fit but it works.

Since I'm lazy and don't want to resize at the moment.

Could you give some extra details on that swap? Again, I've been considering doing a TD5 into my 04.

Where did you get the engine and how much?

I see you needed to fabricate new motor mounts on the frame, any idea if I would on a D2? I'd think the frame side mounts were the same between the gas and diesel, and the only reason you had to modify yours were because that engine never came in that truck? (or is that not true?)

What did you have to do with the fuel tank? Filler, tank, pump, supply and return lines...

Do you think that the wiring harnesses would be 'plug and play' for a TD5 into a D2? I know I'd need an ECU for the diesel, as well as a matching BCU.

It's interesting that the exhaust bolted right up, I'd think you removed the cat? You must have sealed up the pipe coming from what was the right bank on the V8?

Did you reuse the gas radiator? Condenser? You used a new "custom" intercooler? Just because, or was there a good reason?

Any idea if the TD5 would bolt up to and work with my existing auto trans? If not, I would probably make the change to a manual, then would I also need a new transfer case? Driveshafts?

If I converted to a manual, I'm hoping that a clutch pedal assembly would bolt right into place. Then I'm not sure how the shifter would assemble into the existing center console and floorboard.

I'm guessing you used a factory "throttle" cable for the diesel, and it hooked right up to the existing accelerator pedal?

You must have hooked up some kind of vacuum pump to the brake booster? Actually, IIRC, the TD5 would have a FEAD driven pump so you just had to run the plumbing? How about A/C, and PS plumbing?

My impression having worked in the auto industry is if I swap a Disco TD5 into a D2, it would simply be a matter of sourcing all the factory parts and bolting them on, with little fabrication required. Think that's true? It'd probalby be easiest for me to buy a wrecked TD5 D2 or front clip and just have it imported. But I'm not sure on the practicallities/legalities of that.

Rob,

Surf over to ECR. They threw a 300tdi into a disco and did go into some detail about what exactly was different and what they needed to fab et al.

There is also a good thread on Discoweb about a 2.8International swap into a disco.

Hey Rob

My advice if you wanted to do this to the D2.. Buy half a car and the fuel pump/tank assembly.
Nope I am not kidding.
The TD5 is a fly by wire common rail diesel that has many parts that are exclusive to it, most notably the wiring. I knwo of one D2 in So Cal that has been converted and the owner explained that it would have been impossible to do without buying the half car.

What I did was took the engine and "stuff" from a 2002 Defender 110 base model. The 2002 Defender has a similar complexity level to the D1 so the conversion, while still complex, allowed me to pick and choose what I wanted to retain with the conversion.

To give you an Idea, The set up I bought came with the Rad and intercooler. By virtue of it's being a later Defender piece it wouldn't work. Because D1 and Defender are so similar I used a Petrol D90 radiator to cool the motor, this narrow rad left me room to poke my intercooler pipes around the tanks. The Intercooler is a Ricer version fromE Bay that fit and the hoses too.
TD5 uses Hydraulic motor mounts, the frame mounts would need to be fabbed or cut from a doner frame. The Rad is different on a Petrol VS TD5 D2 as well , hard to mimick in the close quarters of a D2 front end if you wanted to keep all the goodies (AC).
You will need a complete wiring harness, ECU, Alarm ECU and the BCU from doner car. Shifter consoles are different from Standard to Auto you will need the transmission that goes with the TD5, you will also need the rear cross member and the transmission mounts as they are also different from Petrol versions.
Looking at the rave there are also different dash wiring details , plus the TD5 instument cluster uses some different inputs than the Petrol.

On a Gasser the Y pipe contains the cats that was removed completely, the down pipe from the Defender td5 fit the disco 1 Exhaust after I cut a bitt more than an inch off the "down" section of the pipe and it bolted right up. The tranny Crossmember fit as well. Because the two cars are close cousins.

I could go on but you can see half a car is almost a requirement if you choose to do a TD5 in a D2. It would save LOADS of time.

That said buying a half a D2 from Europe shouldn't be all that bad. They total cars for parking lot dings over there, my best guess is that the 1/2 car would still cost less than trying to connect your D2 to a 2.8 PS or another motor.

Complete Defender TD5 "kits" normally cost in the neighborhodd of $6K to get them here with low miles and everything you need to do the Job. Half a Car might cost another $4K.
