Jeep Emissions Question/Help

I have a 2013 JK Unlimited Moab edition that has 32,000 miles on it. I don't drive it much but had an issue recently that I thought I would toss out for all of you experts to see what this may be before I spend money at the dealership or at a shop.

Problem: Recently I was accelerating to get on a freeway when suddenly I lost power and the check engine light came on. The more I pressed on the gas, the less power at had. I coasted over to the side of the road and slowly accelerated again and the power shortage went away. The check engine light stayed on, but the Jeep drove and accelerated normally. The next day the check engine light went off. It drove like nothing was ever wrong and acceleration was normal. This has happened a couple of time over the last few weeks and seems to clear itself pretty quickly, but I know it shouldn't be happening at all...any thoughts on what it is and how to fix it? I have not had the code cleared and do not know what code would have come up as I don't have an OBD reader.

Do JKs have the built in code checker where you turn the key 3 times to the off then on position (don't start the Jeep) and the code lists on the odometer? If so, do that and Google the code. A lot of times the CEL will clear but the code will not. Your other option is to go to a local auto parts store and have them run a OBD reader on the Jeep, they typically do it for free.

If it was my guess, sounds like you may have a clogged catalytic converter but I personally have no experience with JKs.

I had this same problem when I purchased gas at the Costco in Chico, CA. This same event occurred several times until I could get enough of another brand of gasoline in the tank.

My jeep first died in downtown Truckee, then Reno. I stayed the night in Reno, filled the tank and drove home to Leavenworth, WA without problems. I did have a Superchips tuner that would clear the code.

Good Luck.
