Jerrycan storage, rear tire carrier

I'm currently working (long-term project) on my 2010 JKUR for expedition/camping travel, and am soliciting advice. I would like to add fuel storage and put it on the outside of the vehicle so I don't have to worry about carrying it in the cab. I've been researching the tire carriers for this purpose. However, the two things that bother me about converting the rear bumper to a tire carrier are:

1) The additional 180lb + of weight. These things are heavy, and most likely unnecessarily so. What happened to the simple rectangular bumper with recovery points they made for the TJs? Most of the new bumpers look like they belong on that Pontiac Aztec crossover thing.

2) It seems like a waste to add the tire carrier for jerrycans. I'm not planning on adding 44" tires. I will be needing a place to store the highlift though.

Does anyone know of a good setup that's not going to add the weight of an additional passenger?
Is it necessary to add the tire carrier or are there additional options I'm not considering?
How necessary is rugged protection for the rear bumper?

any advice is appreciated.

thanks,

Brian

You can add JUST the AEV tire carrier and there new fuel caddy. In my option that would look very stock. You would also get the ability to add a slightly larger or heavier tire without having to worry about the stock rear door coming apart in a few years. They also offer a hi-lift mount and even have a space for a shovel.

I would hesitate adding extra weight to the factory spare tire carrier....

Teraflex has a cast aluminum replacement tire carrier system that looked very nice. It still relies on the stock mounting points on the fixed side of the hinge. They are supposedly pretty strong from the factory.

Just another idea.

Thanks for the input and I'll take a look at these options. The AEV rear tire carrier system does look really nice. However, I bet it weighs a ton and $1,600 just for the bumper? Really? That's more than an entire Gobi rack system.

Or-fab makes a tire carrier and fuel can carrier that has nothing to do with the bumper. In two styles one for jerry cans and one for rotopax style. There are also bumpers from aluminum. Search over at JKO. Any bumper made for the JK will have pics there.

I don't think my expedition-one is aztec worthy....

No no....you can buy JUST the tire carrier and use your stock bumper with it. This would be a simple strong rather light weight solution.

I agree :coffee: But it is his money. I was hoping he would get a simple small bumper like was taking about to go with the seperate carrier.

since your looking at buying one im guessing you dont have the tools to build one. there are always shops that will custom build whatever you want. a tube bumper with a carrier will be less weight than a plate bumper. im only running 33" tires on my XJ (was 35") and i have a tire carrier just because thats extra interior storage space.
