JK Antenna Suggestions.

I have been looking around on this site for about a month or so and must say it has been really nice to see how many respectful people (compared to other 4x4 sites) :wings: . I just took my ham test on Friday and passed, I picked up a Kenwood TM-D710A mobile. I have been looking for antennas for our (really my wifes) JK. I have been looking at the Cool-Tech mounts but they seem to be for the the CB style scew (3/8 I believe). I was just wondering what other JK owners and others are using. I do not want to drill any holes in the body but I am open to pretty much any other suggestions. Thanks for the help.

For a wrangler you have a few options. You can mount it on tab on the front grill guard. You can mount it on a front fender or hang it off the hood.

For the rear the tire carrier is the best place. make a bracket and mount the antenna. Some people use the 3rd brake light mount for antennas.

Congrats on the ticket.

:sombrero: I'm kinda old school, I don't like things sticking out of my JK-off ctr

So my antenna is on the 3rd light stalk, kinda balanced

I picked up my General class ticket earlier this year and put a TM-D710A in the JK as my first VHF radio. The TM-D710A head end is mounted on the dash with the mic supported by a Cooltech Versamount bracket:

I remote mounted the transceiver in the rear of the JK to the wall of my Tuffy security enclosure. The antenna is a Diamond NR770 supported by a Teraflex 00499190 antenna bracket mounted on the spare tire carrier:

The bracket also makes a good base for offroad flags when playing in the sand:

You may want to consider picking up a GPS-710 unit from Greenlight Labs for APRS positioning information along with a set of shielded extension cables if you remote mount the transceiver as I did.

Finally, I also put a Cooltech Ultramount bracket in place with a 4' firestik antenna connected to a Cobra 75WXST CB radio under the glove box for trail rides and such.

Welcome to Expo and I hope this post helps.

Cheers,
Michael.

whats holding the head on the dash? A dash mount is a poor location as it will get very hot in addtion if thats velcro holding it on, in a wreck it becomes a flying object.

Does the face plate mounted on top of the dash screw with your factory compass? When i place my phone or anything metal on top of dash it usually messes up my compass

I had the same concerns that you expressed. The radio bracket is both 3M VHB taped and through screw mounted to the dash panel using non-magnetic retaining screws (does not interfere with the factory compass or GPS receiver underneath the panel). The panel can be replaced with a ~$20 Daystar aftermarket or factory panel if needed at a later date.

Thanks here4fun that is right up the alley I was looking for. Did you use the NMO mount or UHF. I was looking at Diamonds site and they had both? Also what cable setup for the antenna did you use (any pics)? Thanks every body for your help.

I went with the Diamond C101 cable assembly which has a SO-239 (UHF) base:

Note, you may have to remove a small amount of the powder coating on the Teraflex bracket in order to seat the SO239 base.

The 6.5' RG316 mini cable runs from the base through the weather grommet in the door and along the tailgate to the transceiver in the back:
