JK driving impressions... Rubicon vs Sahara

Power and jeep rarely find their way into the same sentence. Even with the new engine it's still a Kleenex box on wheels with a rubber band engine, but man are they fun!!

My advice. Wait for the 2012 version.

While the Pentastar is a marked improvement, the new auto transmission is going to be as much of an improvement I feel.

I actually drove the '11 Rubi today. It will do. Not a race car, but that is not what we are after. There is a possibility that I might hate it on the hills with the trailer, but the $10k off we are getting is half way to a Hemi! When I drove the Sahara last year I only went about 1000 yards and hated it. The spring rates and gearing made the Rubicon fun to drive.

My brother is friends with the manager of a Dodge dealer nearby and picked up his new 1500 today. Because of the multi car deal and the factory incentives we are saving almost $10,000. We won't get that deal on the '12s. Have to see what they give us for our trade...

Trigger has been pulled... Silver Rubicon will arrive before the weekend. I weighed the pros and cons of waiting for the '12s and the deal on the '11 just makes more sense. I will make sure to NOT drive the '12 anytime soon!:sombrero:

:sombrero: I have 110% pure success with my '08 JKUR and everything is better than good, but

If you plan on an auto tranny and perhaps do any towing--the 4.10 diff. gears are not good-you'll want to to regear-

I don't have any idea how the new '12 auto/engine will behave, but I'm doubtful of the 4.10 gears and the 3.73, shouldn't even be in the equation- !!

Congrats on the new Jeep. I have a 2010 4 door Rubicon 6 speed and love it. It feels like it has a lot more power then my 06 Rubicon auto, 00 Sport 5 speed, 90 cherokee auto. Pulling a loaded M416 I still get good gas milage at highway speed. I have driven an automatic of the same Jeep and was not very inpressed.

She wants the auto, so that is what will be. It is, after all, going to be her dd. I am looking at mild suspension lift (2-3") and 295s as the limit for while it is hers. In a few years, I will take it for myself and then the tinkering will begin for real. I will wait and see what AEV does for their new 2" system. I am going to do a trans cooler and hitch, wiring, seat covers etc now, and then see what I want to do for the future. Of course, a pic or two will be posted when we pick it up. Since you all know what stock JKs look like, I will try to get something interesting in the background!:sombrero:

I have to say I was quite impressed with the JK in its out of the box state. It towed our 2500 lb +/- toy hauler pop-up without any issues! I will add OME heavy springs in the rear, and mediums in front, before the next trip as the trailer did sag out the rear pretty bad, and I want to give it a 2.5" lift anyhow. I expected it to be a bit of a struggle on hills, but I could actually accelerate up long hills with OD off. Would I love a 5.7 in it from the factory? Of course, but until I hit the lotto we will make do.

I promised pics with background, but unfortunately some slime-balls decided they needed all our belongings more than us. We were broken into in Portland while at a Chris Isaac show at the zoo. Our 3 dogs were in the jeep but apparently that was not deterrent enough. My camera was part of their take, so I only have a crap cell phone pic. The Chris Isaac show was great though...

(My '05 Orange Jeep included to add to the Jeep porn factor).

I've had both a 2008 Sahara and now a 2011 Rubicon, both Unlimited's. The ride on the Rubicon is, IMO alot better. The suspension on the Sahara was rough, and bumps jolted you around. THe Rubicon, despite being HD, soaks up the bumps very smoothly, and there is very little transfered to the steering wheel. My Rubi is stock with the 6 speed. I've had it offroad (mostly rock and trails) and had no problem with it at all. The new Pentastar V6's, despite on paper having more power etc..from what I've read and heard and noticed (friend has one), there is very little difference. The only thing they changed was the motor for 2012, and the ol' butt dyno didn't notice much difference at all. I'd save the few $$$$$ and get a 2011. IMHO

Spetz... Look up one post and you'll see pics of the Rubi. It now has OME suspension in it too. The factory ride was fine, but not enough for towing our trailer. Hoping the OME heavies do the trick. Going to hook up and tow about 2000 miles starting on friday, o we shall soon know for sure!
