jk custom hard top project.
hopefully start in august because need to be completed by mid sept.

quick notes on the custom hard top.

aluminum frame s every10 inches
pink foam core "will work as core plus insulation aswell"
expoxy glass layered in and out
roll bar suport points "thru top" for loader bars
flush gerry can holders on cargo area side window space
spare tire mount with inner roll bar support on slatned top "design dilema here"
and rear view cameras
top slanted counturing the roll bar in the back "militray humvee syle"
soft top door surrounds requiere
bikini top windshield bar requiere "easier to buy than to make".

top will be strong, light, insulated and rather inexpensive tu build.
I already have everything to build since I build boats every once in a while .
so at soon as I finish my summer trips with the kids I can get to it.

LUISJG,

I'll be very interested in following this project, as I've had similar thoughts myself. Your description sounds really cool. I'm anxious to see how you implement it. Actually, several years ago while I was sitting my boring college classes, I passed the time daydreaming about taking two or three CJ bodies, cutting them up, and putting them on a J-10 frame, to create a one-of-a-kind 4-door CJ...

Then Jeep went and introduced the JK... Now I can just go and buy one!! (assuming I'll ever have the money) But, anyway...

I was planning this same construction technique. One possibility I was thinking about was 'thru top' support for a full roof rack, and making it removable / replaceable so that I could remove the top and put the rack back on. But my plans evolved.

That seems like a really cool idea! Did you ever see the photos of the concept 4-door Wrangler that Jeep put out a few years ago? I think they called it the 'Sahara,' or something? It had a flush-mounted folding shovel in the side. I thought it looked a little cheesy (possibly because I don't like the tri-fold shovels), but I really like your idea for the flush-mount gerry cans.

Have you looked at the Euro/African expedition campers made by ActionMobil and such? Some have the spare(s) flush-mounted in the body. I thing your turtle-top design would look really cool with the tire flush-mounted in the back, but that would certainly be a design challenge.

Have you looked into using RV awning strips? I've thought of doing that, but haven't researched it any.

Keep me posted! With lots of pix, naturally!

thanks for the tips.

the bikini windshield channel bar is only because its the hardest part to fabricate, and since they sell it for like 40 bucks I just had to buy it.

this bar will be bolted and form part of the hard top.

the flush mount spare realy sound cool ,,,gotta think about that.

The Jeep concept car I was thinking about, that had the flush-mount folding shovel, was called the 'Dakar.'
