Gas-mileage
I have a 03' Rubicon TJ, soft top. I get 14.5 mpg on the highway @ 75mph. In town I average 13.8. I run a 4" lift and 33x12.50 MT. Add a big front bumper with a winch and a rear bumper w/tire carrier, and a 6-point roll-cage and I'm get close to 4000lbs. I also run a Kenne Bell Supercharger that sucks another mile or two OFF my gas-mileage. Even prior to installing the blower I only got 15-15.5 mpg. 17.5 was my best ever.
As the man said...these aren't aerodynamically friends vehicles. I try to drive around 65mph as a norm just to take some of the bite out of sponge under the hood. Especially into the wind.
Pulling my 1250lbs trailer that has a fairly high profile, really costs gas-mileage. 10-12mpg on the highway. 8-10 if you want to run 75-80mpg. I try to keep the water and gas cans empty to the last minute before losing the black top for the back-country.
All in all Jeeps are just thirsty. The wind-drag cooeficiency rating has to be that of a brick! This is the price we pay for a go anywhere vehicle. I don't yet want to surrender my front foldable windshield. I suppose I should consider a small compact car for doing anything other then 4x4 driving. But that's tax license and insurance on another vehicle. In the big picture not cost effective for someone who drive < 12,000 miles per year.
I have no doubt everyother Wrangler owner feels the same-especially after they have lifted and added larger tires to the profile.
