JK Unlimited w/Four Wheel Camper photochop

No problem. Cures the overhang problem, wipes out the crew cab advantage. Playing devil's advocate now, would we be re-inventing the idea of putting an FWC on an old Scrambler? I thought someone had done this at www.cj-8.com, but maybe my faulty memory deceives me.

That rocks.

Think the platform is too small to need the crew cab at that point, or simply put the 2 rear seats in the camper area.

H@swiss...$10K?? Yikes! I'd think realistically you'd be ~ $4K for a pop-up style shell, about what a flip-pac costs. Thing is, that's still a lot more $ than a RTT, so might not be as big a market as one might imagine

John, I agree. For a hard-top with pop-up roof, a price around $4,000 should be realistic. I was thinking about the price for a FWC cabin.

77blazerchalet, this looks great.

I think mine wins!
:victory:Your rig is definitely a one-of-a-kind and I see your point. I actually was/am tinkering around mounting my entire Maggiolina RTT or just the mechanism/upper half of the RTT directly to the hard top. Considering my fabbing skills and the fact that my Jeep doubles as my daily driver and company vehicle ... there are some people that unluckily might be better off buying stuff ;)

Has anyone called flip-pac and asked if they'll modify their design, seems like they are pretty well set up to build a "flip over" style design based on their other stuff.

From the Flip Pac owners I've talked to, it sounds like those toppers are maybe 20% of that companys' business. Sounds more like a side venture than their primary line.

FWIW, Four Wheel Campers is looking at the Jeep Unlimited as a potential base for a small camper. Sounds like a lot of good ideas bouncing around R&D right now. I think we're going to see some very cool and unique options coming from them in the upcoming year or so.

If this FWC does see production I would have a hard time not immediately buying one for my LJ, a big statement for me in this economy. I also have had a 12' slide in camper for 20 years (still use it) but sleeping in a tent and traveling the forest roads in a 4X4 is 75% of our camping.

I hope the LJ Jeep is considered as I own one and would probably not buy both a JK and a FWC camper anytime soon.
I will also say that a Jeep JK 4dr and a FWC would put a Earthroamer type Jeep in alot more driveways than some think. Especially if it was offered as a shell and a complete camper.

I just saw a pretty loaded 4DR JK for $20,000 new...... The new Mopar Dana 60 rear axle upgrade would be a nice addition...HUMM..........

:( According to Stan, FWC does not have any immediate plans to make a camper cabin for the JK Unlimited. However, he wrote that he will save my mail and let me know if something should change. Guess we have to wait. :coffee:

Still no reply from Wild Boar ...

Phoenix Campers willing to look at the JK Unlimited

I contacted Rob at Phoenix Camper http://www.phoenixcampers.com/ today. Rob's dad is actually the original owner designer and manufacturer of the FWC; that's when FWC made the cool cabins for the Scouts, Broncos and Blazers.

This is the answer I got from Rob:
Hi Michael,

We custom build to fit any truck. Our first campers, back in the early 1970s were built on blazers, broncos, scouts, and trailblazers only, then we started building units for pick ups too.

Our base CUSTOM MODEL has exactly what you are asking for...
... Let me know what you think, Thanks!

There is somebody who has experience and is willing to work on this :wings: Under the current economic conditions, I will not be able to pull the trigger immediately, but i will definitely start dreaming and putting pennies aside.

Very nice!!!

I would like to see them do something for the LJs as well and would be willing to lend mine and my time to help.

Am I the only one that would LOVE to see an affordable (10k range) camper cabin for the 4 door JK?

Looks like my prayers go heard :wings:

Having participated in and watched the level of interest in this thread and the GRT Traveltop thread grow, we have decided to expedite a project that we have been working for a while. The design & development of a topper such as this for the 4 door JK is something that we have been excited about for a long time, and this is just the push we needed to take our concept from drawings and ideas to the actual product. Our design will be a single hardtop that will sleep two adults and two children in comfort, while retaining all the cargo and seating capacity of a stock 4 door JK.

The design will open forward over the hood with vertical supports down to bumper. The object of this opening direction is to not increase the footprint of the deployed vehicle & shell, important in close corners and brushy areas (or a parking lot for that matter).

Access to the sleeping platform will be through either of the rear passenger doors. The user will be able to fold the seats forward and then stand up between the 2 roll bars. A 60/40 split hatch that makes up the interior roof above the rear passenger seats will be removable and provide the access to the sleeping area. The reason we chose access in this manner was to keep the rear cargo intact for its intended purpose. Rear door access would mean that all cargo would have to be removed for access, undeniably, not very convenient and hence our design decision. When entering through this hatch, a platform will remain above the rear cargo area for staging bags etc. The hatch can be replaced from inside the sleeping area if desired to increase the sleeping area for children.

We are using a fully breathable and waterproof tent fabric, light grey in color. This will eliminate the need for a separate storm cover. Tent windows will have a small awning, similar to those in use on RTTs today to allow for the windows to be partially open for ventilation during precipitation, a happy thing in humid environments. The fabric, sourced from Australia, is no stranger to rough use and harsh environments.

The interior of the shell when closed will have a hard ceiling giving one the sense that you are under a regular factory hardtop. The advantages of this will be good headroom and improved insulation. Those of you who have JKs know how anemic the A/C can seem on a hot day in the back seat because of the single wall thickness of the factory hardtop. The exterior finish will be standard black, similar to the factory and will be paintable for those who want match colors. Factory glass and connections will be used for the rear door. Side windows will still be in place with an optional hard side insert that doubles as an external accessible compartment large enough to stow a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.

We expect the overall height of the top to only increase by 6” over the factory height. Weight will be less than 100 lbs more than the factory hardtop. The top will attach using all of the factory hardware and can be easily put on in about 15-20 minutes. The shell can be customized by adding awnings to the sides. No provision for roof racks will be made, it would simply complicate opening and add to the COG, something we all prefer to avoid.

The targeted price point for the top will be $4400. The work for the prototype has begun and we are in the mold making phase. We expect to have the working prototype completed in Jan/Feb 2010. We are now accepting a 10% refundable deposit on pre-orders for a limited production batch of only 10 tops to be made. 2 of them are already spoken for our vehicles. We expect the remaining 8 tops to go quickly. They will be completed in the Spring, in time for the Overland Expo. If you think you are ready for this cool solution to turn your JK 4 door into a truly self contained vehicle, drop me a PM or of course, you can always reach us at Adventure Trailers.
