Just to get a few opinions... Which repair is best?

Here is the deal, I am posting this up for my parents 2003 d2. They don't know much about forums to get the best info and as this being my favorite Auto forum I figure I would ask the experts. The deal so far around 6 months ago they snapped the drive shaft on the highway. It hit the road snapped back up and knocked a hole in the start of the transmission. This caused a pretty fast leak. With this leak a few other problems have arisen first off it starts in limp mode about 50% of the time and must be restarted until it goes back into regular drive mode. The three amigos are coming on every so often. The steering gets almost fully locked at off ramp speeds and turning styles. Also, a shake of the wheel at 45 mph. They took it to a shop and below I will attach the body of the email to get some of your thoughts on it and see if there is anything else to get checked and everything else. I will say this shop seems very trustworthy and knowledgeable and is a straight shooter I just like to get another few trusted thoughts.
Here is his email explaining his repair thoughts...

The 3 amigos is the shuttle valve in the abs modulator, the fail safe issue is due to the low fluid level and burnt fluid, as a result of the the broken governor housing we can do this two ways first would be to remove the transmission and replace the governor housing and service the transmission. The second would be to put a used transmission in, the first way would cost $1400.00 including the the 3 amigos which is about $500.00 the second way would be $1900.00 and would include a used transmission. The bottom line is that if there is any damage to the transmission because of the low fluid level that we don't see we may end up having to pull the transmission and replace it later. For the $500 difference I think the best choice would be to put a transmission in the car so we know we're safe let me know what you would like to do.

I want to thank all that can help with this situation. I have been a very long time lurker on the site and respect so many of the thoughtful posts.

You put a hole in the tranny and kept driving it? Replace the tranny with a used one. $2000 to replace your tranny and fix the shuttle valve is a deal.

If you're getting the the 3 Amigos from a 114 error, and this guy is telling you that $500 of this bill is the fix for that, then do it yourself. Even with buying the whole new shuttle valve, you can address this for less than $130.

Here are instructions:

As for the tranny, if you fill it up with fluid, how is the it shifting? I'm not a fan of throwing away good $$$ on a potentially bad tranny, so IMO I'd probably go for the replacement at this point. Of course, I wouldn't have driven it after cracking the housing either...

drop the tranny pan, would be interesting to see what residue is in there, how burned it is and if there is any sign of burned up clutches

I wish I had more information for you all. I am quite a bit a ways away from the car so I can't just go check it out to see anything without an eight hour car trip. I was just letting you all know the information that I had and the letter that the mechanic sent to my father. A 1900 for a used tranny doesn't sound like a bad deal just wanted to get a better feel for it since I am away from the car. The info I have is what you see above.
