Kid Sized Backpack?

My soon-to-be 9 year old daughter wants to go overnight backpacking in a big way, and this led me to look around for kid-sized backpacks. I've found nothing, unless you count novelty backpacks not suitable for even a day hike.

I'm looking for something just like a good quality light/fast adult pack or day pack, but 50% scale. She would be carrying a sleeping bag, ensolite, water bottle, and maybe some lightweight food. (For her size, I wouldn't want to exceed 10-12 lbs.) It should have some kind of frame, padded shoulder straps and a padded waistbelt- the obvious stuff.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I just picked up 2 backpacks each for my 7 and 4 year old from REI.

We ordered the Squirt Hydration Packs for day hikes and trips to the park and the Big School backpacks for overnighters. So far so good. Looks like they may have something similar to what you're looking for as well.

REI has a nice selection of kids backpacks -

How long is your daughter's torso? This model at REI fits 10-17 inches, one of the reviewers ussing for a 6 year old boy. It should work.

Have fun and I think I'd leave some room in your pack so you could transfer stuff if she gets tired.

Funny, I asked a sales guy at REI last time I was in there, and he said they had nothing. Ditto Sport Chalet, and I never did bother going to the REI website.

There's one on Ebay, but a quick look at the straps says its probably just a modified book bag.

Like I needed an excuse to spend any more time on the REI website. Thanks!

At that age she should have a pack with waist support. I don't see any reason not to get an internal frame pack instead of the external frame, especially since they cost less.

Agreed. And one with Hanna Montana on it. Not for the backwoods, anyway.

Look at Duluthpack.com They have what may be the all time best made packs (IMHO), and they are made in the USA, in MN. They have many sizes and are indestructible. Both my kids have them, they have survived several years of school (my 9 year old), kindergarten ( 6 year old) and multiple camping trips. They still look new...
