King Starboard

I'm thinking about using King Starboard as an alternative material to plywood for the bed drawer/sleeping platform in my second gen Tacoma. Is there any compelling reason not to use this material? I like that it's more weather resistant than wood, although I believe it is a little heavier and more expensive.

It might not be rigid enough even when thicker and heavier, the sawdust is hard to pick up with the static but it drills great. I do like it though and use it if possible you just have to get used to it......

It would be spanning the width of the bed with a support running down the center (also where the two drawers will split), would this not be enough support to prevent sagging?

I have made many projects with StarBoard. It's a great material, but has a couple of issues.

Mainly, it's expensive and heavy. Plywood is just the opposite.

It needs supports, but if you use it, a center support will be more than sufficient support.

I thought I would bring this back to life. I've put off building the platform as I decided a while back to sell my 2nd gen Tacoma for a 3rd gen. My 3rd gen is almost here and so ill be getting started soon.

I debated using wood instead for a while for the weight savings but after visiting a local plastics company that sells King Starboard, I've decided to use it.

My plan is to use mostly 1/2 in Starboard for the top (the actual sleeping platform) and for the drawers with 1in Starboard supports spanning the width of the bed every 18 in with a middle support running the length of the bed.

They also showed me a PVC product that is much lighter than Starboard, and cheaper, but not as strong. I'm considering using this for the drawers to save more weight. But not sure yet.

I decided on Starboard for durability. I like the idea that it basically lasts forever, I can clean it with a hose and never have to worry about it rotting.
