Klondyke for Thanksgiving

This past Thanksgiving, we camped at Fourmile Campground near Klondyke, AZ. We seem to have found a surefire way to end droughts - if we plan a camping trip, it will rain.

At least you get double rainbows:

We fried a Turkey, and fended off the rain with our umbrellas.

Yummy! Fortunately, we had a tent trailer to eat it in, because it really started raining hard as soon as we sat down to eat.

We baked pies, potatoes, and rolls in our Dutch ovens.

On Friday, we had planned to go to several abandoned mines to go rockhounding. Unfortunately, people have put up gates and locked them, blocking access to many of these sites. We spoke to the BLM, and they said they were upset about it, and working to get the gates removed. They said the crazy lady who blocked access to Aravaipa Canyon and Turkey Creek for so long set off a whole round of road closures where roads cross private property.

The road up Bear Canyon is blocked, the road to the ghost town of Aravaipa is blocked, and the road to the Dog Water Mine is blocked, among others.

The BLM suggested a rockhounding site to the south, where we found some agate in the rock face:

We also went up Turkey Creek to the cliff dwelling

We have seen a lot of cliff dwelling over the years, but the architecture of this one was different.

On Saturday, we drove to a place where we could see the fresh snow on Mt Graham, and the Large Binocular Telescope on top of it.

We also climbed the hill by the campground. Mostly mesquites and acacias. I think next time we will camp in Turkey Creek.

Great place for thanksgiving. That is one of my favorite places in AZ.
