Back in 1974 Land Rover published a 21 page booklet titled "A guide to Land Rover Expeditions" Publication #: R1068/8.74

Hermen Vlothuizen in the Netherlands is building a collection of Land Rover publications, scanning them and putting them on line.

The guide can be found at: expedition guide link

I thought people might be interested in seeing what the land Rover factory thought was needed for overland expeditions back in 1974.

One interesting thing I picked up that isn't in their normal tech guides is that Series Land Rovers are spec'ed for a maximum of 150 lbs on a roof rack, including the weight of the rack. Now I'll have to run out and weigh the gear I normally stash on my rack to see if I should make any adjustments.

Defenders have a 75kg roof limit too, which equates to about 150lbs. That's a "dynamic" load, rather than static load, which means that roof tents are fine because the vehicle won't be bouncing down a rough track when it has the additional wight of the occupants in it. Weights over 75kg/150lbs are a legal concern because of the way they affect vehicle handling, not just the roof structure, which can be assisted with heavy duty braces.

The big problem is that the specified limit includes the weight of the rack, so a heavy rack like my Brownchurch uses up half the allowable weight before you even put anything on it. This is why the more expensive aluminium racks are so attractive to expedition veterans - they can carry more kit on top without breaching the vehicle limit.

While mildly exceeding the specified limits is unlikely cause handling or structural concerns, it could void your insurance if you have an accident, and over-zealous police or border authorities could take issue with it.

I don't mean to poor water on a great discussion. I know intentions are probably good, but does he have permission from the copyright owner to scan and post the publication? Most people either don't understand or choose not to understand intellectual property rights and I don't mean to be the forum's copyright police, but as one who makes a living from intellectual property, I must ask the question.
