Expedition Leader
Well I've landed in Oman, having left the US with my family and dog...
now the truck finding starts.......I had to give my disco away for almost nothing....it was worth more in parts than the price I got.
So.........the mission is buy something here to use for the 2-3 years of my contract then take a 6 month or year sabatical from work
and take it down through africa,,, I know, everyones dream
But I'm right now only 1 country away from the northern parts
of Ethiopia
Cut across yemen, then the red sea and I'm there.....
So as usual we have the truck decision to make.......Defenders were never imported here as they are classed as military vehicles..
But there are a lot brought in from the countries next door, this morning I located a 1989 defender which has been recently overhauled.....gearbox/ transfer case etc etc
and fitted with a naturally asperated 3.5ltr V8, how reliable are these ?
I have no idea.......other than the efi disco 2's and the abs lights....hehehe
There are little or no diesels in the end of the world as gas is cheap.
Running around there are 80 series Toyo's within my price range, complete with leather and cd players....
On the streets, I've seen there are 4 door lancruiser II's 70 series as well, which look interesting
I've only seen one troopy since arriving so they don't look like an option....
Is the V8 110 a serious contender.....or is an 80 series really that good a truck to travel down the dark continent ?
Little or no internet sites here.....I have also found a 200 series manual diesel toyota LC for 24K with dual tanks......but very high milage, base models used in the desert as lease trucks
for the oilfield..comes complete with interior roll cage 2003 models
