LED Interior Lights

I have a Toyota 4Runner 4th Gen SR5 so I've been researching based on that. What I list below may easily apply to many vehicles.

These can work for map lights. (Also for door lights that have a rectangular opening 13/16" x 1 9/16")

6 x 50-50 warm whites are 1.26" x .79" T10/BA9S/Festoon for $6.29 each
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/6-50...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19c6912650

so 2 x $6.29 = $12.58

For the domes it would be optional to have one or two of these 24 5050 panels at $12.99 for 2

For the door lights there is no reflector in the assembly so really fancy LED wedge bulbs are not necessary. 5 SMD T10 bulbs at $5.75 a pair would work. (or use the same panels as the dome lights)

so 2 pairs = $11.50

$12.99
$12.58
$11.50

Total on-the-cheap cost = $37.07 shipped

Oznium makes some bright lights for your dome lights, but they are pricey. You can pay up to about $30 for each. The largest size fits perfectly (5" x 1.5") in the 4Runner's dome light area.

Trying to view the domelight one to see if it might replace the anemic one in my AirLander tent, but page will not scroll on my Droids browser.
Will check later, thanks for the link.

That's the route I took when I changed out the interior lights on my Tundra to red LED. Quite bright - more so than the stock white bulbs but easier on the eyes at night imo.

I'd like to have a custom board with 48 LED SMD 5050 types but half would be red LEDs and the other half warm white LEDs. A small switch would select between the colors

The dome light panel is 58 x 30 mm or 2.28 x 1.18 inches

I thought about doing something like that too but without adding wiring or switches. I looked at maybe leaving the map lights white but change the dome lights to red, or go all red with just the courtesy lights on the door white, or any number of variations. In the end I ordered enough to go all red and have been happy with it - I have the stock bulbs on hand in case I want to revert some or all of it at some point.

You can make your own pretty easy. Get a bag of LEDs off ebay and wire them up on a piece of pcb. There are calculators on the web to help you figure if you need a resistor or not. I made one for the inside of my camper shell and my third brake light too.

I would agree that a talented person can handle fab work on their own. The bag of LEDs that you refer to should be surface mount devices (SMD) and if possible the larger 5050 series. It allows you to get a lot more light density per square mm than LEDs in plastic dome packages. The key with the SMDs is providing some heat sinking as the chips can suffer higher optical decay per 1000 hours. Picture of a heat sink version in my first posts.

Another reason that I've started this thread is to show how easy it is to buy off-the-shelf LED lights without paying a 60% markup to a middleman.
