Less-than-critical ER XV-JP Upgrade: Floor Mats

One of the few problems with having bought my EarthRoamer Rubicon is that they pretty much did all of the modifications. Already got me uppity bumpers, wheels, tires, winch, lift, lights, rack . . . what's a guy to do?

Ummm . . . floormats. Must . . have . . . new . . . floormats. ;)

The mats that came with the XV-JP were light, wimpy things, just a step up from heavy felt on cardboard.

In a flashback to younger days that included British sports cars, I decided to buy some coco mats. These things are made from fibers from the husks of coconuts (of all things) and they've been a traditional auto floor mat material for fifty years. The big advantage is that dirt and sand filters into the mat, as does a reasonable amount of water. Air can get in to dry them, so they don't mold or mildew, and they'll generally stay looking better without cleaning than rubber matting. Plus the available grey dot on black pattern was a nice match with the JK interior.

I got mine from a group called Natural Fibers LLC, which has been making these things for a while and has gotten several good testimonials on the web. They are nicely made, very heavy with a nice rubber backing with nibs on it to keep it from sliding around. The mats are made custom for the vehicle, so each mat had a grommet in it that mated with the factory mat holddown.

I'm very happy with them. The fit is absolutely perfect and the quality very high. At $130 plus shipping, they cost more than the rubber mat alternatives--and more than cheaper coco mats from J.C. Whitney-type places--but I'm guessing they'll prove worthwhile. You can look into them at
