Let's talk about spark plugs....3.5L Montero

Is there any reason to not use OEM replacement plugs for the 3.5L? With all the hype about spark plugs its hard to get concise answers or proof of real gains. shouldn't a quality iridium be good for 60K+?

Also....I know from looking they will be a mutha to replace but is it doable with out plenum removal?

I can only tell you that you need to use either NGK or Denso. platinum or better. Be best to go ahead and replace the wires while you're at it. Don't go cheap on those either.

Can both/either be done with out plenum removal?

Not sure about your LS but on an SR, they're so complex and difficult to get to you want to use whatever will last the longest. Usually that's an Iridium plug. NGK or Denso are preferred.

Based on multiple owners experiences / histories DO NOT USE BOSCH! You will end up replacing them sooner than you want.

Mine is a SR. So does that mean they can be done without upper plenum removal? And thats good to know about the Bosch, thank ya.

Depends on the model year. On my 96SR you have to remove the plenum in order to remove the plastic plug hole cover on each side.

Bosch makes decent wires, but unless you have a VW it's best to steer clear of their spark plugs. I trust NGK for any application. I even put them in my LSX powered GM cars.

On my 95 SR, I was able to change the plugs and wires without removing the plenum, although it was extremely difficult. It took 4-5 hours... on a job that took 20 minutes (Including compression test) on my 87 4runner.

95 SR, 3.5 liter quad cam checking in, no problems changing plugs, drivers side; remove one bracket and the cover, remove coils and change plugs. passenger side; remove 3 brackets, intake tube and throttle body, remove cover and slide down under egr tube, change plugs. DONE

took less than an hour.

Wish it was that easy to change mine. I have a 3.0 LS. I had to remove the upper plenum and clean the contact area before putting it back on with a new gasket. Still did the plugs and wires with gasket in about 1.75 hours.
