All of my led experience would sugest that, although its getting better, led is just not birght enough after a few feet of dispered lighting.

LED technology is advancing rapidly. You'll be seeing it in driving lights and even headlights soon.

The one-driving-beam-one-pencil-beam is sometimes called the Aussie pattern, since it's common there. I haven't tried it, though. I do like the idea of side-facing lights to illuminate the edge of the trail. They don't need to be as powerful as forward-facing lights, so glare wouldn't be as much of an issue.
