LineX - Over Rail or Under?

Which do you recomend if I'm planning on putting a canopy on, and one day may even put a flippac on my truck. Does having it over the rail make it harder to get a good seal? I live in an area that we get pelnty of wet weather, and I'd like the inside of the canopy to stay as dry and dust free as possible.

Thanks all,
Val

It depends on your long term use. I had my bed LineX'd under the rails because I didn't want a strip on black stuff showing on the side of my truck after the canopy was put on. The guy a the LineX shop says that they have to roll some over the side so it doesn't lift up later. After about a year, the cap came off and the amount of damage done by the cap was significant. I wished I had gone the over rail direction. That being said, there has been reports of guys that have gone the over rail route only to have their cap leak due to the canopy gasket not sealing well against the LineX. I had this problem with the only portion of the bed that was LineX'd over the rail, the bit by the cab. It leaked under heavy rains or when I went through a car wash.

On my old Dodge I had Rhino lining over the rails to protect them from all the stuff it was hauling. When the cap went on I never had any leakage though I did make sure to use a good weather seal and to keep it in good order. The Rhino lining is textured more than the Line-X so I don't think you'd have any problem. My current truck is Line-Xed but as it has the factory rail caps on it it wasn't necessary to spray them but I sure would have if those rail caps weren't there.

Do you haul messy landscaping materials, firewood, or similar on a regular basis?
If not, since you are planning on a canopy install, have you considered a BedRug? http://bedrug.com/

I wold suggest over... I originally wanted under and th shop did it over. I was pissed at the moment but after some loading in and out i was glad because it did save from damage a few times.

WASURF - I'm thinking once she is set for traveling, she won't be used much as a truck. May haul lumber and such on the sleeping platform, may invest in a small utility trailer for the messy stuff. I've looked at the bedrugs and plan on getting it, if nothing else for the insulation and sound value it will add.

The truck is a 2011, so has the plastic bed rails, which I plan on removing and bolting the canopy to the rail. I don't plan on removing it until it's replaced by a FlipPac in the future.

I have mine done over. It roughs up the weather stripping taking the shell off and on, but it makes it feel more solid and damage proof when the shell is off.

Might I suggest this product as well...
http://www.truckspecialties.com/tailgate_seal.htm
I bought (2) packages/kits and used one for the tailgate gaps and the other for the rear hatch gaps on the ATFP canopy.
Combined with some aggressive use of heavy duty black silicone, I have virtually no dust, moisture, or drafts getting into the back of my truck. Water and dust will also make its way thru the multiple drain holes located in the small cargo pockets and storage doors on your bed sides, so don't forget to get after those too.

Here are some example photos...

Scroll down to post #77 pictures 1-5.

I had the "full" bedrug in both my previous trucks and really liked it.
I decided on only using a floor/tailgate combo this time with my interior FP build and save a few $$$.

Good luck with whatever you choose.:)

Hummm, I'd go with just the bed rug if it wasn't so slick. My previous truck had the lineX and while it was rough on the knees, it didn't let any thing slide about. Seems like it would help quiet the composite bed too.

Think I'll remove the plastic caps and have the LineX go over the rail. Doesn't sound like people are having issues getting a good seal, and it will protect the top rail from the canopy.

WaSurf - Thanks for the links to the tailgate/bed sealing, looks like just the ticket for keeping what should be outside... outside, and me snug inside.

Now if that refund check would just get here, I could get a few things started :jumping:

i had the rhino liner sprayed on the rail to my 4runner so that when i remove the top it does not damage the rails it sits on. They can spray that stuff on smooth to.. It looks like it was ment to be there.

I went with an over-the-rail application from Line-X. It came out very nice and protects the bedrails. However, I have an '02 Tacoma with the standard sheet metal bed so I'm not sure I can give good advice on what to do witha newer Tacoma with the composite bed.
