I'm Real close to purchasing a little guy silver shadow, I have a few questions though. Brakes, these things are so lite do you find that brakes on the trailer is a bennifit. I know that they use dexter axles and you can get a lift kit but is that the best way to go. I would also like to add some kind of shock system is there a way to add shocks to these Dexter torsion axels. I won't be taking it rock crawling or anything fire roads washboard roads in the desert kind of thing. I plan on doing most of the mods myself any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since we have NO clue about what your tow vehicle might be......... Yes brakes are a very good thing!! And If nobody has the answer about those axles, check on the Teardrops&tiny travel trailers site.

Brakes are good - not necessarilly needed, but nice to have.

Dexter axles do not need shocks. The shock/stabilizing function is inherent to the design of the axle.

I have a Silver Shadow / Rough Rider - look through my build, and will probably find some good ideas. :sombrero:

You never need brakes on a light weight trailer......until you need them. We recommend them for every trailer you can never get enough braking.

In off road situation they are always helpful and can be used to pull the trailer around obstacles, or allow the trailer to go over an obstacle. The brakes on the trailer can be applied independent of the vehicle brakes and can be applied to slow or stop trailer sway. Way too many reasons why you should have brakes.

Regarding the torsion axle, they do well in slow rock crawling terrain, but do not move fast enough on wash board to absorb the vibration and movement. This is one area that many people don't quite comprehend. Rock crawling needs vehicle clearance and can result in body damage. Wash board vibrates the whole trailer to the point at which it starts to fall apart. Don't underestimate wash board.

Thanks for the info Martyn, do you have suggestions for dealing with washboard? I will be adding brakes. Scott, awesome build thanks for documenting it.

I have a Silver Shadow/RoughRider like Scott's but larger. 6x10 with Jeep wheels/tires. Two marine batteries.
...heavy...
It has a 3500 pound torsion axle. And I deal with washboard by going slowly.
