Long range seating

I almost have the " go ahead " to purchase aftermarket seats for our TJ. As always I try to do extensive research, and like to begin here on these forums. We are looking for an upgrade from the stockers, a seat that doesn't leave us feeling fatigued and washed out after a ten or twelve hour run. New seats might just be the most important upgrade we will ever do. Price wise I have seen the sky is the limit. What's out there that works really well for under 1k for a pair? Thanks in advance for everyone's advise.

I have Master Craft Rubicon's in my Tj and loved them. you could sit in them for days and not get tired. They were a bit of a pain to get in and out of in a jeep with 37's, but once you were in it was gravy!!!! Don't cheap out on seats. Before the Master craft seat I got some $200 race seat of eBay that looked nice but fell apart and were not all the conformable. If the Sky is the Limit get the Mater crafts.

mastercrafts are great seats and i almost pulled the trigger on them. the deciding factor was being able to get seats, brackets, seat heaters installed for under 1k for a pair of Corbeau Baja RS seats. So far they have been fantastic. They fit me perfect and the seat heaters are just gravy. Nothing like a cold morning to appreciated seat heaters. I think the mastercrafts were close to 1600 for the same setup i got with Corbeau seats. I couldn't justify not get the Corbeau's with that 600 dollar difference. That was my powertank, high lift, and pull pal $$$

my problem is finding an aftermarket seat wide enough.

most of your baja style seats that wrap around the sides are too narrow.

Well, I know a few guys who have installed the 8-way power seats out of a ZJ or WJ into their YJ or TJ, very easy to do and they are comfortable. Nothing like pushing a switch to raise the seat up 2-3 inches vertically so you can see over the hood better. If you have done Hell's Revenge you know what I'm talking about.

Well, I went the mastercraft baja RS route. This summer I got to use them on a long road trip and off road use. I have to say i am very impressed. Being suspension seats they tend to take out a lot of hard bumps and even work to make the smooth dips smoother.

A while ago I saw the standard color seats advertised really cheap. You can spend a lot on them if you would like; I got custom color, heat, dirt sport, and lumbar. I have yet to hook up the heat and have never had to adjust the lumbar. I would choose a basic color with possibly lumbar and call it good. This combo would be well less than $1K.

I can not say concerning the quality of other brands but you can buy mastercraft with no worries at all.

I drove my TJ 65,000km from Alaska to Argentina, and never had a problem with the stock drivers seat. I'm 6'2", about 190lbs.

Before I set out my brother and I did a few road trips and so I sat in the passenger seat for a few hours. There was something about the front passenger seat that was absolutely horrible and gave everyone (me included) "jeep back".
I never did figure out what was "wrong" with it compared to the drivers seat.

We also run the MasterCraft Baja RS in our Jeep. They are great seats for sure. We will be on the trail for 6+ hours then drive another 4+ hours sometimes and no exhaust for me at least, and I am 6'6" tall. I do have to remove my Gerber multitool from my belt as the hip bolster will cause the Gerber to dig into my side.

Dan - I think it comes down to individual body structure when "comfort" in a Jeep is debated. I am only 5-10, but most of my height is in my torso. I find that the Jeep seat has a curve up near where the upper side bolsters and the integral headrest come together, forcing my shoulders forward into a "hunch". I have a chronic pain in my left shoulder due to this (I drive 80+ miles per day). This posture is further degraged by the lack of room for my left arm/elbow (LHD Jeep). I am now using a foam pad to move my upper body further forward to relieve the posture problems, but I am following this thread while I consider better long term options. I am going to talk to a local upholstery shop about revising the seat padding. I am also planning to get some half doors to alleviate the left arm space issues. My son has a pair on his YJ, and they make a useable difference in arm room.

We put a set of Viper (heaters, lumbar, etc) take outs in our old TJ, and they were great after you got in them- infinitely adjustable. As stated above, getting in was the issue with coil overs and 40s, but once in them, paradise!!

Are they still able to move the seat forward to get into the back?

To the guys who have installed better seats in a TJ, how well did the seats and brackets fit the Jeep?
.
I have heard a few people say they don't fit the console well or the side of the seat rubs the roll bar real bad. I have never been able to verify either claim or brand.
.
Have any of you had issues with the drivers side flip forward option? Does the seat hit your rollcage when flipped up?
.
Most people just talk about the comfort when this issue comes up, thanks for any input.............

My Wet Okole seat covers did make the TJ seats a little more comfy, but Mastercraft seats would be my choice to....................

I will be getting to that point also with my XJ... I will be following this thread to see what else has to be said on the subject.

Yeah, the seats power forward and back, not as quickly as a manual seat will but all of the other adjust-ability makes up for it. Power lumbar is nice too, I love my seats.
