I'm looking at a 99 Montero (full size) with 129K miles
Owner says it burns some oil (about a quart every 3-4000 miles)
says its common to have leaks around the valve seals? any ideas on cost to repair?
anything else common with these vehicles that I should look for?

Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, valve guide seals are a common wear point. When they wear, oil gets into the cylinders and you will see a constant trickle of grey/blue smoke out of the tailpipe. Its a lot worse during a cold start or when revving after a long idle.

The fix is simple. Replace them. Most mechanics will suggest doing the valves at the same time but they can be done without having to remove the heads. If you don't replace them, the oil will eventually clog and destroy your catalytic converter.

Check that it goes into, and out of 4wd. Sometimes the CAD stops working properly due to lack of use... seriously.

If it has the locker, make sure it actuates and stays locked (which means no air leaks), then unlocks.

Other things to check are when the timing belt, water pump, plugs, wires, etc. were last replaced? It's not a trivial job. It cost me ~$1500 to have that all done.

Check the radiator for mineral deposit buildups and if excessive have them 'rodded'.

Also check the inner & outer CV boots for tears and replace as needed.
