Looking at a 2000 4Runner, some concerns...?

I've been looking for a 99-00 4Runner limited with the rear locker for a few months and haven't had much luck. Today I looked at one that I thought was very nice for the price. It was the tan/silver 2 tone, 2 owners, ~175k miles, good paint and interior for its age, almost no rust, tow package, etc. Overall it was in really good condition but it had a few strange problems that worry me. I was wondering what you all thought?

First, the transmission fluid was bright red (brand new looking, didn't smell) but there was some oily sludge on the top of radiator fluid in the overflow tank. The line leading back to the radiator also had some brown/yellowish oily sludge built up in it. It didn't look like the "strawberry milk shake" but it looked like there was some oil in the radiator fluid. The radiator fluid was red but apparently Toyota uses red fluid according to Google. I'm thinking the radiator fluid is just really old and needs to be flushed out? The dealer said they would flush it. Also, the oil looked fine and didn't smell weird or look like it had any water in it. This was all after test driving the truck about 20 minutes including driving it in 4low and on the freeway.

The truck had some random electrical problems. Both the drivers side rear window and the back liftgate windows didn't work. The climate control fan and temp control worked but the "auto" didn't light up or seem to work. It had an older alpine stereo and amp but the front speakers weren't working. I'm assuming something is wrong with the install or wiring. Again, the dealer said they'd fix these problems.

It probably needs a new timing belt because the sticker says it was changed at 90k and the truck doesn't have any maintenance records. The engine is clean, looks like the plug wires are fairly new, has a KN filter, throttle body spacer and a relatively quiet aftermarket exhaust and cat. The truck drove great, straight, brakes felt good, transmission shifted smooth, engine felt smooth and felt as or more powerful than my buddy's '98. I drove another 2000 with 105k miles on it a couple weeks ago and this one drove better.

I think the dealer will take 7.5k after fixing the problems above which IMO is a pretty good price for Washington state. What do you all think? The truck isn't perfect but that's okay with me. I have a company car to daily drive so I'm mainly just going to use to truck for road trips, camping, and eventually towing a small trailer. If I buy it I plan on doing a tune up, changing the oil, front/rear gear oil, installing an external tranny cooler, and doing the timing belt/water pump.

It sounds like it might have a break in the tranny cooler line in the radiator and the rad. fluid is mixing with the tranny fluid.

That was my thought too when I first saw the radiator fluid. But after getting home and thinking about it how would the tranny fluid still be perfect after driving the car for 20+ mins? Considering the radiator fluid is under pressure and the tranny fluid is not I'd expect the tranny fluid to be contaminated...

Any other thoughts? I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy the truck tomorrow. I think the radiator fluid just hadn't been changed forever. The electrical problems still worry me but the dealer said they'd fix them...

I myself just got my 1st 3rd gen (98 LTD) and am learning all kinds of fun stuff about it - some good, some bad.

Are you sure the oily gunk isn't a stop-leak or similar type additive?
I've encountered that on other rigs - and while it looks unsettling and is by no means ideal, it never seemed to be an issue.
I was under the impression "PMS" was rather acute and fairly catastrophic? i.e. you'd know it if it happened.

First thing I did was purchase a B&M cooler (install this w/e). Cheap insurance. ;)

^^ Thanks. I'm assuming "PMS" - lol - is the "strawberry milk shake"? The more I think about it the more I think that the tranny and tranny cooler are fine. That being said, I'm still going to order a tranny cooler ASAP if I do buy this truck.

Radiator stop leak is something else that I never thought about, great idea! It definitely could have been that.

I called the dealer this afternoon and let them know that I'm interested in it still but want them to fix the electrical issues BEFORE i take delivery of it. When I was looking at the truck this weekend they said that if I bought it they would put it in writing and schedule to fix the issues later, this is because I live over an hour away and had a buddy with me to drive my other car back. I'm not in a rush and have other vehicles so would rather not have to fight with them in case they "forget" they promised to fix the issues.

So I didn't end up buying this one but I did end up finding a silver 2000 limited (color I wanted) with 64k miles, sliders, and a toytec lift kit already installed for ~9k. It also has the rear locker and is in awesome shape...but there is a catch....

It has a reconstructed title and the guy backed it into a tree while camping so it needs a new hatch. The title is because it was side swiped last year but the insurance pictures didn't look to bad (both doors, side step, most of the trim on the right side, right rear wheel, right rear axle shaft), I also spent 20 mins under the truck looking at the frame, suspension mounts, body mounts, etc looking for damage and didn't see anything. One of the inner CV boots is freshly torn (I'm assuming from the lift) so I'll probably end up replacing both front axles just to be safe. I think it also needs a new rear drum or something (never worked on drums before) as there is some fluid inside the right rear wheel. At first I thought it was the axle seals but I noticed the drum is dented and has some moister on it. The insurance pictures showed the truck sitting on the drum in at the auction, I'm assuming they drug it onto and off of the flat bed. I'll probably make a build thread once I get some more time.

If that were my truck i would very inclined to look carefully at the rear axle etc...

As I'm sure you know, it would probably be best to identify what fluid is coming from the drum, it's gear oil then you know something is up with the seal/shaft/housing...

Yeah. I plan on taking the wheel/drum cover off and inspecting things, just haven't had time yet. I put a straight edge on the axle housing and it was straight. Hopefully everything underneath the drum is still in good condition....
