Looking for advice on a 4x6 off road trailer build to pull behind and Jeep Wrangler

It may be to late to make a change but to access all your gear from the top is harder then from the back by swing door or tailgate. Also your RTT can mount just on top of you trailer (better for towing) and you don’t have to make a RTT support above an access lid but you could make supports for transporting kayaks or a canoe just above the folded up RTT. A more compact setup with less wind drag while towing. See my pictures for some ideas.

I'm w this guy....although I might be bias LoL

Most people, me included, are guilty of overbuilding.

The tongue should be strong, but make it tall if you are concerned, not necessarily square.

For example, the M101A2 is a good stout trailer. It has, what is, essentially a rectangular tubing tongue. 1.5”x3” x 1/8”. It’s actually a C channel with a 1/8 plate welded to the open end of the channel. So it’s basically a 1 1/2”x 3” 11 ga rectangular tubing.

Here is this same 101 at work today.

So, tell me, how much weight do you plan to carry in your trailer?

For a little lightweight trailer like you are talking about, 2x2x1/8” angle would work just fine for the tongue. For the frame I’d go with sq tube. But not over 11 ga. (1/8”). You could get by with 14 ga if your walls were properly fastened to the frame, as they will add a lot of strength.

built this one a few months ago, its 4' x 6' and 15" deep. within 3/4" of track width of jeep and loaded with 1000lbs of stuff didn't drop my highway MPG anything noticeable. i have/had ideas of putting a RTT directly onto the lid, but now I'm having more ideas of building a bigger trailer.

You are a craftsman! That's near perfection.

I agree a 2”x2” 11ga. For a short tongue, my tongue is 6 ft. long 2”x3” 14ga. and sticks out 50” from the front of the trailer. With trailer loaded my tongue wait is 150 lbs. and to be safe I add a second 2”x1” channel iron cross member. I used 1.5” 11ga. Angle iron on each side of tongue. See picture.

Awesome. I appreciate all the help. Some great ideas. Now I’m back trying to decide if I should build another one like my last one but just a smaller side profile. My last ones side profile was a 5x10. But if I went smaller I’d do a 4x8. And then do a RTT on top. That way I can sleep 3-4 instead of just 2 in an RTT. But still in the planning stage.

This was my last one.
