Hi! so apparently Ive been a member here for 9 yrs, never posted. I probably joined up when I was into FJ80s. Im not incapable of searching, but im not sure what I should be searching for. My google searches either end up with the same 4 companies, or random weird stuff thats 4 years old.
I have 3 dually trucks, a 7.3l 4x4, a 5.9l 4x4 dodge, and a 6.7l 4x4. I want to convert one of them to a full time camper. Remove the bed, cut through the rear for a passthrough and tote our mountain bikes all over the southwest.

Im wondering who sells fiberglass shells that are bed replacements similar to the ER or UXV. Cabover, with various options I can add. I dont want to drop a truck off and have them do the work, really hoping to take on the project myself, I finally finished my garage.

What are some of my options, or what terms should I be searching for? thanks

There is company that advertises on here Boxmanufacturer or something like that, don't know anything about them, and have yet to see anyone in the US use them. Totalcomposites sells the fiberglass.
Are you going to be cutting into the cab of the truck or will you have it professionally done? ITB trucks in canada has done it here for another member with a 5500 and pass through. Don't know the cost of that either but it's probably spendy, i'd probably make sure you have everything designed and dialed before cutting into the cab of the truck incase there is a mistake or things don't line up right with that rubber 'boot' thing that goes between cab and camper.

BoxManufacture can supply you with a fully build box made in Germany. OverlandExplorer in Alberta can also build you a customer camper. If you are more of a do it yourself person, you can chat with us :) Weblink down below in my signature.

Sounds like exactly what I want to do. Check out http://www.idacamper.com

Says he can do a custom mount situation like you want and he'll just do a shell build if you want and you finish off the inside. His construction on his camper was damned impressive.

xpedition camper, based out of MN. I stopped by the shop on my way through town and checked out his camper. It's extremely rugged, but not crazy heavy. I was trying to decide between the two construction methods, fiberglass sandwich panels vs aluminum. I am leaning towards aluminum for a number of reasons. Price wise too, I think he's pretty competitive.

I am going to forgo a 'pass through' not really my thing, or rather I can only afford to have one truck. Since you have a few it's probably not a problem having a single dedicated camper.

We offer our shell empty, built, and anything in between. We can do permanent mount campers in a variety of configurations including with a side door in addition to the double rear doors or instead of. We have a few exciting builds we are starting on now , 3 of which are flatbed models, 1 slide in. PM me or email me at ryan@bahncamperworks.com if you have any questions as to what we can do.

There seems to not be a lot to work with in terms of buying a ready made camper box with a walk through. To obtain an education on Pivoting frames do read dhackney's long running treatise on pivoting frames...along with the 200,000 others who have read the thread. The larger and heavier the camper box, especially if you have a Ford, the more you need a pivoting frame. This all depends on your exposure to twisting your axles up on bad trails. If you are staying on reasonable roads, dirt or otherwise, no need for a pivoting frame. I would start with the Oregon outfit as they seem hungry to get some product out there.

Ryan - I follow you on FB and here, local in Pdx and have seen your camper in HR. Great job. When will you have pictures of the flatbed models to share? Anything for smaller trucks (tacoma) in the works?

Our first flatbed camper is in the works. It's a full custom setup for a family of 4. It has a 12' floor making it quite a bit bigger than the prototype. We'll be posting pictures as soon as we have them, lots of people asking about it. We are also working on another flatbed model with a side door along with the rear doors. We should have that shell rolling in about 5 weeks from now. Sadly I don't think we can do much on the compact truck side of things, there just isn't enough payload there. We have been talking about an ultra light true minimalist setup for the tacos but it's a ways out, gotta get the bigger campers moving first. Let me know if you're headed out to the gorge anytime and I'd be happy to show you the shop, campers, etc.
Thanks,
Ryan
