Agree with above with 4 people and a dog , WK would give you more room for everyone plus whatever else you take along.
4 people in my KJ is enough so that everyone has room, 5 is tight ( or 4 and a dog )
With that said, I'd never own a WK .

WJ is definitely the better choice in terms of room and offroad capability out of the box. If you're looking for fuel mileage I'd say your best bet is the Liberty.

I've never had a WJ but I think one would be perfect for your intentions. Of the following Jeeps I've owned I'd rank them as follows for light off road and highway travel. All were mostly stock except for larger than stock all terrains and I have a family of 4. Tommudd has a sweet KJ but in stock form I thought they were lacking off road and uncomfortable on long trips. 1 is the highest rank.

1. ZJ
2. WK
3. KK
4. KJ

My favorite were my 3 XJ's but they are tight for 4 people and a dog. The ZJ with a 5.2 and 30x9.50 bfg's was a tank in the snow and off road and really comfortable. All got within about 2 or 3 mpg of each other combined.

I just got back from a 5 hour drive in my WK. It is by far the most comfortable Jeep (or car for that matter) that I've owned. The same trip was punishing with a family of 4 in the KK or KJ.

The WJ is a great Jeep. I have the 4.0 and Selectrac, but it's surely no horsepower giant. With 4 people and a dog and gear, the V8 may be desireable. Not to get in a urination festival over the V8 vs the 4.0 :peepwall:, but I prefer the reliability of the 4.0 motor.

There are some good simple suspension choices for the WJ -- I have a 3" Iron Rock Offroad.

Another option for you would be a 4-door JK, though you could put yourself in a WJ for far less money than a 4-door JK. When I went looking for a used JK for my new daily driver, I found guys with '07 and '08 2-door JKs with 120,000 miles still asking like $13,000. :Wow1: Too much for me. I picked up my 93K mile '04 WJ for about $6K.

Good luck
Pete

Lost and Found at the same time.
I would go with a zj because they aren't too small and aren't to big. I've gonna camping in my 97 with 4 people two dogs and supplied with out a problem. As far as off road capabilities they are stock solid axles a 2.72 low range and with I believe a 2.74 first gear (4 spd auto 42re) and axles gears stock of 3.73 I believe is what mine has it makes a final crawl of 27.7 which is very respectable.

I've got a KJ in my garage with Selectrac as it was an option of the Limited models. I love that transfer case! One reason I can't seem to think of getting rid of it as along with four-low and part-time, it adds full-time, which is like all wheel drive. The full-time is very handy for mixed road conditions, and it's the family winter Jeep. I've plowed through deep snow with it, driven across the country in the winter, and it's been problem free.

We are picking up a 2008 wk 3.0l CRD TURBO diesel. They are rare but out there and are the ultimate grand Cherokee. Mpg's easily in the mid 20's making for long travel overlanding.
