Looking to purchase an imported TDi - advice?

Morning all,

Quick background, I live in DC and haven't had a car for 7-8 years. Use motorcycles and scooter to get around everywhere. Hoping to do more outdoor photography/exploring/camping, and was looking for a decent, stock vehicle that can do it all.

The 90/110 TDi's caught my eye as they are good on gas, can have a tent on the roof, and have more than enough room for my darkroom and other supplies. Prices aren't too extravagant either, as both can be found for around the price of a Honda Fit.

1st - the decision betwen a 90 and 110 is a bit hard. My wife and I are looking to have a kid within the next year, and would like to bring him along. Is there an option for a facing foward rear seat/belt kit for the 90's? I've seen some for the softop 90's sold here in the US, but it looks like the belts attach to the rollbar, whereas the hardtops I am looking at have no hard mounting points.

2nd - what exactly should I be looking for in terms of inspection and paperwork? As mentioned, we haven't had any type of car for years, but I do all the maintaince and work on the motorcycles/scooters myself. I'm handy with a wrench, if I know what to look for. It sounds as though motors/transmission/transfer cases are pretty bulletproof, but frames/bulkheads need to be inspected closesly. Anything in particular to look for?

3rd - any experiences with dealer/resellers? I've been looking at the selection at roversouteast.com

4th - anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks! Sorry for the length, but hopefully the more information I give, the more I get in return.

The problem will not be with finding a 110, but the years legal for import will only have a normally aspirated 2.5 diesel. The 200 and 300 Tdi came later. You would likely need your importer to install the 300 Tdi and then send it over.

Or me! I constantly have some tdi equipped trucks for sale in nearly every combination possible. Have everything from 90's (1 with an auto!), 110's (3 en route), and even a 130 doublecab!

Hey Chuck,

No 110 yet.. Too few details.. I'm still hunting but recent developments mean that I'll be spending my extra time doing some extra manufacturing.. Why does work (even hobby work) have to get in the way of fun at the least opportune moments.. :sombrero:

Contact Doug Crowther, he is in your back yard...

Thanks Dale. I have a 300tdi 110 double cab 20 mins from DC if you'd like to come check one out. Sorry for the lame photo's but they are from today. Used the double cab to pick up an import.

If you go with a 90, I'd highly reccomend Exmoor lock N Fold forward facing seats.I've got em and they work great for infant seats. Kinda costly now though, maybe 800 to 1000 bucks each.

Holy Crap, a 130 in my backyard :Wow1:

I have one and run up and down 29 to my place in Central Va. If you see a snorkled up, smoke beltching, Tdi, white with tan canvas on black wolf rims and 33's flying through your part of the world, flag me down and we'll have a beer.
