Loremordred's '04 Montero Limited Build Thread

So lost Grasscat II ('98) to ex and my car was totaled. This is my new starting project.

New to me 2004 Montero Limited with 201k , all records (1 owner), slight interior scuffs due to Teenagers.

So far base repair was initially thought to be a Catalytic Converter, but took it into a smog shop, and $280 (Replacement O2 rear + labor + smog cert) got it all straightened out.

Runs Great, seems I have the rear oil leak (O rings?) and C/D Flashing which I have narrowed down to 4wd working on a cold day or cold start, but flashing after the vehicle is shut off/warmed up. So its either a contact or a vacuum (temperature expansion of vacuum line?).

Things Need fixing:

Timing Belt + Water Pump
Suspension (get a little sway @ 50mph on a bending roads not sure if struts or sway bar? kinda slingshots from one side to the next in the front)

Things Done:

O2 Sensor
New tires Installed: AXIOM A/T LT235/85R16 (Retreads from BFG KO's) from https://www.treadwright.com/individual-product/23
Spark Plugs + Wires
Gaskets
Plenum + Throttle Body Cleaning
Lubricants (Gears, Transmission Flush, Oil/filter)
Remove Running Boards
Trim Wheel Well fender

Things To Do:

OME or Iron Man Suspension kit + lift
ARB Bullbar + Winch
Light Bar
Roof Rack solution
Portable Fridge
Super Sliders
Snorkel
Extra Battery + Solar Panel Setup
Double Din Stereo/GPS/R. Camera (factory has no AUX or Bluetooth)
HAM Radio
HLSD or Locker?

Extras:
Awning
Camping Trailer or Rooftop Tent

Since I'm in the middle of moving soon, it may take a while to get things done, and funds.

Need a wrenching buddy with tools and time. I don't have tools anymore, which makes some of my steps limited till I get situated.

Edit: Fixed the issue with the pictures.... size limit :D

Congrats on the new rig!!! Can't see the pic though. I'm using tapatalk so it might be an issue on my end. Looking forward to seeing you get it all fixed up!

Good luck with your new car!

201K is brave :)
I bought my 2001 with somewhere between 158 and 159K and thought it's risky enough :)

Looking forward to updates.

Pic link is broken.

Ok, I fixed the picture issues.

Got maintenance done mostly. Had issues getting to the timing belt.... since I couldn't remove the accessory plate/back plate. Maybe someone has a idea how to do this without pulling the whole engine out... or the steering shaft...

I've found a few freewheel Clutch Solenoids from chinese vendors... does anyone have any luck with these? $23 vs $130... both my solenoids are shot, affecting the drive, disengaging the awd... (C/D blinking).

But looking to add more to the Monty.

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
Looks nice!
Great list of things to do!

When purchasing parts such as solenoids, I've always installed oem parts.
If the first one can last as long as 150-200k, then it seems to be a good value.

Welcome aboard.
