Below are a couple of professional pictures taken on our Biophilia Expedition 2010 to Sumbawa Island in Indonesia, attempting the Tambora volcano.

We started all off from Bali and went straight to Sumbawa, leaving Lombok behind for later on the way back. Basically Tambora, Dompo, Pantai Wane, Bima, Sumbawa Besar and the kicking Tepal Track to Lunyuk before we headed to Lombok's beaches and famous Rinjani vulvano as indicated on the below map. I am going to post more pics as time allows.....

My series III you have seen most probably in various LR magazines, it used to be yellow, now it is fluorescent red and I am frequently contributing to various off-road magazines. The truck is at it was build 1973, original 2.25 l petrol engine. Just had a proper restoration before I brought it all the way to the East. 2009 I have been to Lembata island with it, that is even further away east of Flores...

great shots, I remember when your truck was yellow. You had some steering issue at that time if I remember correctly.

How are the ferries these days between the islands?

Any plans for trips this year?

Hi Ray, when I was on Lembata back in 2009 I had the steering issue, you are right. Changed the whole thing and never had any problem again. On the Tambora trip not a single small issue but the Denfender had.

Ferries are unreliable as always. In this case it was easy though, the ferries from Bali to Lombok and from Lombok to Sumbawa have "fixed" schedules.

This year in October I am heading towards Sulawesi.

I have no plan yet who is going to join but there will be few club members for sure. Plan is also to include some orientation games, hence "trophy". 1988 Toraja was part of the Camel Trophy.

Some truly great shots you have here, they really made me feel like I was there! Thanks so much for sharing, and increasing my cabin fever while I wait for spring.

Your Lombok shots look amazing, it is my wife's favorite island and I really would love to explore it in a Rover.

Have you been to Timor Leste yet? I spent some time there a couple of years ago, it is also a very cool place, it still has the original Portuguese roads made of crushed coral from hundreds of years ago, and there are some roads around the seasonal lake in the east, close to Jaco Island, that have lost their bridges and are completely overgrown, it would be interesting to try to follow that old route and look for the ruins of the original Portuguese pousadas and ranch houses in that area. Lots of untouched old WW2 caves and structures to explore in the mountains there too.

I think you can barge your truck in direct from Surabaya or from Denpasar, or go overland from Kupang, if that is an easier ferry.

Please keep posting pics of your trips, they are wonderful to see.

Cheers

Ray

Hello Ray,

I have been to West Timor already and all the way up to Atambua but not with my Landy. I find the landscape kind of boring and very similar to Flores and East Sumbawa and I think bringing a car from Indonesia to East Timor is not as easy as it might sound, there is a history. And bringing the car back is even more challenging. I better think of going to Irian. :REOutShootinghunter
