There are better vehicles in the category. Take a look at the X3 and Q3 as well.

The big body cars is what LR does best.

A guy I work with bought an LR2 a couple of years ago - now he wishes he'd bought the LR3 instead - especially after he looked at mine.

On the contrary I think the LR2 is the best vehicle in its class, depending on what you are looking for.

They have proven to be durable, reliable, and fairly capable for what they are. If you are looking for a high powered, sporty, zippy little "SUV" then yes I would check out the Q5 or X3, but Land Rover's tuning of their AWD system and fitment of decent all season tires with reasonable sized wheels makes the LR2 a great all around performer.

I have yet to meet someone who doesn't love theirs.

Totally agree with Adam, the LR2 is a staple for Land Rover, it is their most reliable vehicle. It's got "utilitarian"(compared to other RRs) class, and I've fit over 1000lbs of Rovers Magazines in one and driven it over bad roads without issue.

Or a Subaru Forester for down market value and function.

VW Tiguan is not bad either with it's very functional flush-folding rear seats.

We have an LR2 currently that my wife drives. I own an LR3 (built). She loves the LR2 but I dislike it immensely. Even though a LR mechanic says it is the most reliable truck ever released by LR, the gas mileage in town is only 15 MPG. I am looking to replace it with a big body Land Rover or an LR4, as for the money and for the small concession in gas mileage, I'd rather have the comfort of the bigger truck.

I know this is a Land Rover forum, but...

Have you considered the new Jeep Cherokee? The styling is polarizing (I happen to like it a lot... it looks FAR better in person IMO), but you can get a very loaded Cherokee Limited for about the base price of the LR2.

I think the LR2 is very nice for it's class. We borrowed one from the dealer for almost a week and it's a very nice vehicle. I think it's as nice or nicer as the X3 personally. They are known to be very reliable as well, but part of the reason for that is they are not nearly as nice as the other Rovers and don't have as many bells and whistles that eventually need to be maintained/replaced, like the air suspension.

All that being said, I completely agree with Dendy when comparing the LR2 to a bigger Rover. If there is any way you can, spend the extra money and look at an LR3/4 or L320 Sport even. The LR2 gas mileage is terrible for it's size. My wife is getting with 1 mpg in her RR Sport that we were getting in the LR2. I think the LR2's are actually very expensive for what you get as well. For example, we got an extremely clean low mileage certified 2008 RR Sport HSE Lux for only 6k more than the 2010 LR2's with 30-40k were going for in our area. An absolute no brainer.

Rav4, rouge, cx5 Ect are all better than the lr2.

A 2 year older l322 can be had for about the same money like posted above.

It really depends on what you are looking for. A Rav4, Routan, or CX-5 will not be quite as durable or "dirt roadable" as the LR2.

Likewise, a 2 year older L322 will be a much bigger and more maintenance intensive liability.

The LR2 gets a bad wrap for not being a "real" Land Rover like a Defender or Range Rover but it really does do a nice job bridging the gap between something like an LR3 and a Rav4 or CRV.

I think the LR2 is a comfortable to drive vehicle, but the price is ludicris for what you are buying. Granted, the interior is nicer than the Ford version, but it's still just a Ford, priced like it was a BMW

I do agree Adam, and we even have an LR2 in the driveway at the moment (a loaner while the air lockers are being installed in the LR4). It is the new car and has a pretty fantastic little motor.

My perspective is probably a bit more conditioned, as I have driven some really excellent cars in that category. I expect Land Rovers to drive and "feel" a certain way. The LR2 lacks that connection with the passion and heritage of the brand. The things that justify the expense of the green oval and the little bit of magic that comes with it.

It is interesting to hear the argument of reliability for the LR2. It is certainly a quality car, but the character is lacking. If it is only about reliability, then there are better choices. If it is only about "love" or "character", then there are also better choices.

Personally, I would buy an LR3 or L322 Range Rover old enough to be affordable, then deal with the maintenance if required. Our Range Rover has been really good, only recently needing a front bag replaced. It is such a wonderful car. . .

Well said, and I completely agree with you. It's not a bad car, but it is a bad Land Rover
