I've been putting a lot of thought into it, though I don't really have plans to buy a new vehicle right away.

I've been driving the Disco since 2005, and a D1 for about six years before that; and a nice 109, a Range Rover, and several other classic Land Rovers before that. I love the driving position and the way the vehicle drives, and they've been pretty tolerant of my schlepping gear in and above and behind.

My first car was a Jeep CJ5, and it was fun. It was also old and in poor shape and my parents didn't think it was safe.

The LR3 would be a fine vehicle. It'd tow better, and have more space inside, maybe even enough to sleep inside now and then if I needed to. I'd be looking for a 2007 or later, preferably with 50k miles or less, for $25K or less.

The Wrangler would be a lot more fun, and I'd enjoy taking the roof off during the summer. It'd also use regular gas and get probably get a bit better mileage than the Rover, and service would certainly be less expensive. I'd want a 2012/2013 for the new engine and more horsepower, and probably a Rubicon, though I don't think I really need one, that would be up around $35k for one with a few miles.

Either way I'd want a towing hitch, trailer brake, and roof rack that can hold several sheets of plywood.

I've noticed that fans for one or the other tend to be strongly divided - with the other faction being the Toyota'ers (for me the 4Runner feels small, and seems to cost more than it's worth).

At the moment, I'm getting the expensive 120K service on the D2, so I'll probably squeeze some more miles and time out of it, or I may post and ad and see if anyone bites. It's got the CDL, so it's still a very capable vehicle, but I guess I'm just tired of driving the same thing - which I guess argues for the Jeep.

Comparing a DII and an LR3 for driving experience is not comparing apples and apples, ... rather like comparing to different classes of food all together.
The LR3 was a miraculous engineering improvement over the DII.

Two things about the JKU: 1) top towing capacity is 3700lbs., so at 3000 dry, you are at the top end of the comfort zone when pulling. You would also HAVE to have a transmission cooler added.
2) Gas Mileage SUX!! I get 12-14 tops with the JKU.

The towing capacity of the LR3 is 7716, so pulling a 3000lb trailer ... the LR3 wont even know it is there.

I was HEAVILY thinking about a LR3 while riding in a tow truck with my 109 on the back. Considering the type of trail riding I've done all this year, a LR3 would be more than capable. I can think of a few times a spotter would have made the difference but just having power and traction control on the front axle (gotta have that rear locker for me!) would have negated it. Also I have a suspicion that the LR3 suspension probably flexes more than my 109 suspension. Slap armor and 3M clear protection over the entire thing and it can handle most of what I typically want to do.

Then there is creature comforts. MPG would actually probably be the same since my 109 was getting 17 mpg on the highway...somehow.

Anyone want to buy a beat up old 109? It'll have a good engine and cruises fine. Body is rough, though but chassis and bulkhead are both solid!

Keep the Series unless you absolutely need it to be your DD. I've gone from a modern truck, 04' Disco, to a Defender and have loved the switch. That being said, the LR3/4 is a great rig and I have considered one for my DD in the future

I'm tired of old trucks. I've been driving an old truck for 10 years. Seems like the trails these days are easy and the pavement to get to them is long. Right now DD'ing an SUV makes no sense. I've got a cheap large sedan right now. Really what I need is a econobox for daily work.

FYI for all you LR3/LR4 people, we're doing a giveaway of a few new Exmoor Trim front seat covers in a couple different colors.

See. Buy a LR3 and a pair of those. Then ramble to the g/f something about how she has to "earn her keep" and make her drive while I lay in the back seat taking a nap as the heated seats keep my feet and upper body warm.

Explain to me how one can improve on this system.

Having test-driven both, I'm still confused. The LR3 is nice but boring. The Wrangler is fun but loud.

So I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha TW200, and keeping the D2 till the oil leaks are higher than the door sills.
