LR3 gas fumes

I've posted this question on some LR-specific forums but might as well toss it out here as well.

While on my little adventure last week, I started noticing strong gas fumes from the truck. The first time this was with a full tank and after some big climbs/descents, so I figured I had simply sloshed some fuel up into the vapor recovery system. it was gone the next day.

The following day I started getting it again when traveling on some rough trails at low speeds. This time I again had a near full tank. Again, it eventually stopped but the smell was worse than the first time.

A couple days later and again I got the smell, stronger than ever. This time I had 1/4-1/2 tank of fuel and wasn't on particularly rough trails.

Then on the trip home I noticed it out side the vehicle after an interstate run, though not inside. Obviously this was a smooth, high-speed run.

I haven't dug into the truck yet to see if I can find anything obvious. My thoughts were that the evap system must have a problem, and that I'm only getting the smell when traveling slowly because the fumes are blowing away at higher speeds. However, I believe a failed line in the evap system should throw a code which I haven't seen happen.

I've found a number of references to gas tank problems on the earlier LR3s, but nothing for the later trucks (mine is an '07). Most of the chatter I've found on-line goes something like 'I had some gas smell in the truck and took it to the dealer, but I don't remember what they did'. So it looks like there may be a trend, but I haven't found any actual repairs.

Another data point: this was happening around 6000' and 90-100 degree temps.

I'm going to be under the truck this weekend doing some maintenance and will be doing a visual inspection of the fuel/evap piping while I'm there, but if any of you have any peals of wisdom you'd like to toss out I'd be happy to listen.

I have had this problem as well with similar circumstances eventually leading to a stalls while driving. Always high altitude and after long periods of driving at altitude. I have never been able to isolate the problem and have had the dealer look into it twice. There are no fault codes thrown when this happens so it has been even harder to resolve.

You can see my thread here on this subject. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/110692-LR3-Engine-Stall-Vapor-Lock

Good luck with finding a fix.

New properly installed / sealed tank seal, be sure the one they install is not the TDV6 one. I sent the part numbers to one of the guys in SCLR club. There is also a TSB on similar/related reports with Land Rover. I believe this was all posted on the other thread you started.
