LR3 - what are the weights inside rear bumper?

Anyone know what the two big weights inside/behind the rear bumper do? I was trying to track down the source of a clanging noise and found my exhaust knocking against one of these weights. They hang over and are bolted through the frame and swing back and forth quite easily. Kind of remind me of a pair of- well, you know...
Just curious.

Paul got it. These things make the stock setup ride so nice. Lifts, bigger tires and actually going off-road changes the dynamics of these things. You'll find these types of devices on either the front or the rear of a lot of vehicles. With the stiffness of the LR3 I was surprised to see them the first time I crawled under the truck.

resurrecting an old one here...

So if these things are great with a stock truck, how much good do they do with a mod'ed truck?

I'm just starting a rear bumper/tire carrier build and I can't help but see extra weight there.

OK so in the big picture removing them wouldn't save much weight on a 6500 lb truck, but it would be nice to actually remove something instead of just making it heavier at every turn!
