lug nuts

Hey folks,

I need some help here. I noticed earlier today that my driver's side rear tire was low, and I noticed a small nail in it. No problem. Change it with the spare, patch the old one. No biggie, right? Wrong. Swollen lug nuts won't take 27mm socket, bought a bunch of other sizes, too big or small. So I tap the 27mm a bit and it goes on. Sweet, I go to torque off the lug, putting alot of force into it... no go. Now I can't get the damn socket off.

What do I do? Take it to an actual tire shop? What do I do about lug nuts? I don't want to buy new disco ones only for them to swell up again. Internet searching renders little help, except maybe some RRC lug nuts.

Any help would be great, thanks!

1 1/16 socket with a breaker bar always works for me. But how to remove stuck socket now? Have you tried WD40? How about a bit of heat?

1 1/16 is just a bit too small, they seem to have swelled considerably.

I have been using a breaker bar :(

*update* got the socket off, vice grips and bit of force.

Now can anyone answer the question of if the lug nuts I linked in post #2 will work? I don't care that they will look ugly, Fuctionality over form for me.

And will a tire store, such as Goodyear, have better luck at removing the stuck on lugs?

For now I am going to keep the tire aired up, probably stick in a plug for now, and run it until I can get an answer on those lug-nuts.

Thanks, folks

I wouldn't run steel lugs on alloys, but that's just me. I'm sure someone here can offer a more technical response.

The caps on them are probably messed up from someone using the wrong wrench, or torquing them too hard. If there's really no way to get the 1 1/16 on there, try a 1 1/8, but don't go any bigger.

I use a 1 1/8th 6 point socket on swollen caps. Been doing it for 5-6 years. You can do a couple things. First, you can just remove the caps and the steel under it is fine and works with a 27mm or 1 1/16th albeit they are ugly as there is a hole in the top of the lug nuts. Second, if you have a DI (or RRC or D90) you can buy early RRC lugnuts that have no caps and no hole in the top. I finally fit a set to my 1995 LWB ending the 5-6 years of the oversized socket use.

Steel wheel lug nuts will not work on alloys.

These will. They're not the thin crappy aluminum caps.

The perfect fit for the lugnuts. Rubber coating on outside is a nice touch.

$179 for a new set of lugnuts ... ah ... not worth it, besides those are the alloy lug nuts. In fact, those are new 87-90ish RRC lug nuts which I mentioned above. He linked to the steel wheel lugnuts above which will not work on alloys.

There are three type of lug nuts on D90/D110/RRC/DI

1. Steel wheel lugnuts (found on NAS 110s and anything that shipped with steel wheels ROW)
2. All steel alloy wheel lugnuts (found on 1987-1990ish RRCs)
3. Steel with aluminium cap alloy wheel lugnuts (found on all DIs 1991ish-1995 RRC and 94-97 D90s except the one or two that shipped in 1994 with steel wheels)

2 is what you want. However, unlike 3, they do NOT permit the safe running of steel wheels as they lack the proper taper on them to seat the wheel properly so you really should have an alloy spare or carry 5 lugnuts of type 1 or 3.

I have read about this, and this is what I would like to do. However, I read into it a bit and someone on another forum said this was a bad idea, but did not go into further detail as to why.

I assume this is pretty easy to do. Just get the lug nuts off and pry off the caps?

Yeah, just remove the metal caps, clean up the steel lugnut that's exposed and paint them. Of course they will now take a smaller socket, but your struggles are over.

Yep, I agree. I didn't read your post close enough to realize we were thinking about the same thing. I thought you meant steel lugnuts would not work with an alloy wheel thus saying type 2 would not work with alloys. But now I see that's not what you said, you were saying that steel wheel lugnuts will not work on an alloy (which is exactly what you posted) where I thought you meant steel wheel lugnuts (also what you posted ;) )will not work. Sorry for the mixup.

BTW, other than seeing those lugnuts (type 2) on RRCs I've also seen them on an imported '97 German-market D110 a few years ago. The owner believed they had always been on the vehicle. Dunno, maybe they hadn't.

Update....

So I got around to getting the lug nuts off, and getting the caps off is easy, but very time consuming.

The steel lug nuts under the caps are not as ugly as stated, I can definitely live with them knowing I can get them off whenever I need to. They are just plain looking, I will probably not even paint them. Also they are 26mm not 27mm.
