M101 CDN and '04 Land Rover Discovery

Hi! My very first post on ExPo! Been reading lots of threads on this great forum for about 2 weeks now. I just picked up an M101 CDN last weekend and am looking forward to fixing it up. I have quite a few plans for this down the road including a lid, RTT, nerf bars, etc., but for now I just want to make sure it's as road worthy as it can be.

A few notes about this trailer:

- The hand brake is gone although it looks like a bracket is still attached. I would like to find another brake and cable to make that piece functional again.
- The landing leg bracket and in fact the entire drawbar/lunette bracket appears to have been inverted. Not sure why, but the mounting holes for the landing leg are actually above the frame. Should be as easy as unbolting, flipping it back over, and reattaching...I hope!
- The axle looks to have been longer/wider originally and at some point cut down and welded back together. I will need to get some decent pictures and post here, but for my novice eye it looks a bit odd.

So a few questions that hopefully someone can answer:

1. Does anyone know the original length/width of the axle? I have looked through the M101 manual over on the Yahoo Groups and while it is very informative I haven't found actual specs.

2. The tires are shot. I would like to replace them and the wheels to match my '04 Land Rover Discovery. I realize the 16" Disco rim is a bit of an odd bolt pattern, but has anyone done this swap? I believe the bolt pattern is 5x120mm (approx 5x4.75 with a 4" backspacing) so my understanding is I just need to find a hub with that pattern, no?

3. The springs are pretty rusted and flat so I plan on replacing those as well. From my quick measurements it looks like the length of the springs is 36" and they are a 9-leaf. Does this sound correct?

I think that's a good starting place for me for now. New axle, new springs, new hubs, rims, and tires. Get the landing leg and brake replaced and operational. Should keep me busy for a bit!

Thanks for any information anyone can share! I have really enjoyed reading so many of the build threads - such great ideas! I will get pictures posted ASAP.

Here is a picture of the "modified" axle:

To me the axle is too long and the tires sit too far outside the fender:

Toss the axle and keep the rest. That cobbled axle looks scary!
Looks like a nice trailer to work with.
Keep us posted.

I'll second scary. That is NOT an OEM axle for the CDN M101. It actually looks wider than the OEM.

Since you WILL replace your axle (right?), check EXPO forums for various informative reads to so you can get the axle width you want based on your rims, tires and clearance needs.

As for OEM springs, they are VERRRY hard to find... Impossible if you want new. Check out Old Man Emu/Dakar springs (CS012FA). Those are the closest (L x W) new springs you'll find. Get the add a leaf. These are firm spring sets--no where near as stiff as the 9 pack you have now--and suitable for whatever you put on them.

DEFINITELY replacing the axle. Just trying to find the right wheels, axle, and springs. Thanks for all the input. I will check out those springs as well. Hope to get some pics up once I get this build rolling!

Keep the springs! if you want a softer ride take a leaf or two out and experiment,
The axle is the only negative to the whole trailer and that is a simple phone call fix.

Thanks, Mark and azxplorer! That's my plan now just to swap the axle and get some new wheels/tires. I appreciate the advice!

I prefer Dexter axles as they have a really strong reputation and I have never had any problems with them. I would google Dexter Axle and then look up distributors in your area and order from them the width and hub lug pattern you want. If it is a common size they may have in stock, if not it is usually a 10 day lead time.

Sorry, but you're wrong in this instance. The OP has a 1/4 ton CDN (Canadian) M101 not the heavier American M101. Toss the axle and get a straight one.

From a quick search on olive-drab.com tells me that any trailer tagged as a M101A3 has an "offset" axle, which is what you have. Also that same axle was widened to accept the larger tires to be towed behind HMMVV's and larger 3/4 ton trucks. So I think that axle is original.

A US M101A3 axle

This is the axle from a US M101A3 It drops on the ends and is wider to match HumVee's

I think the M416 axles are similar, i will try to measure mine tonight.

What your axle looks like is a standard trailer drop axle. nothing special and good for like 8 lbs (LOL)
