M101A2 Clearance question.

I use my M101A2 mostly as a utility trailer for now. Once I sell my camper, I will be able to put money into transforming it into my RTT/camp trailer. My question is this for those who have modified the axles. Is there clearance to cut the inner fenders and open them up so that there is 48" of space between the fender wells? It looks like there is, but before I go chopping and welding, I would like to be sure. It make sense to me that even after the utility use (hello, a 4X8 sheet fitting easily) that you could modify the trailer so that your camping items are mounted on modular 4X sheet stock for ease of customizing and removing. Just a thought, or should I tell the good idea fairy to beat it?

I looked a bit. There is some room but I didn't get the tape out and measure. I am sure you could play with the track width a bit and get there, but hey, at least I bumped it for you.

When I assumed I was going to get a M101a2 I had planned to cut out the wheel wells and move them out for the same reasons you mention. I cannot answer the axle question but seems most folks try and end up with a 64" WMS width using a 62" axle and spacers to allow factory wheels with the spindles. You will need to measure out what you are planning on doing. If you are going to keep the stock axle you could use shallower back spaced wheels to get the track width to clear the wheel wells.

As far as modifying the wheel wells, I will be narrowing my A3 to 49" between them down from the current 55". I will cut the welds to move the whole wheel well inward after removing 3" of the bed floor and the crossmembers on each side. Then weld them back in place. This plan is with the intent to replace (or build) the axle with a 65" WMS width to match my JK and will use the same 5" BS 17x8.5" wheels and 37" tires. This combo allows about 52" between the tires and a overall width of 77" or so.
