M416 Build

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
Finally scored my M416 trailer. It is a pretty neat 1967 that came from Pennsylvania that is actually technically (I believe) a pretty rare 416 that is a couple inches wider, called a M614 or this is how it's identified on the tag. If you google M614 trailer it yields some cool results...

So I'm unsure of what to do with it. My interest is pretty much because I always wanted one and never had one :) My friend Damon with a sweet BJ42 wants to build it with me and it will sort of be "ours..." It is more useful for him as BJs are so small but would be fun to pull behind and use with my mini truck versus sleeping on the ground...

It tows like a dream, 75 mph without batting an eye and it is so light you don't even notice it there. All I noticed was slight loss of mileage. It does jackknife easy in reverse so I am planning to extend the tongue. Plenty of surface rust but no rot so we are going to take it apart and sand blast it, probably after thanks giving some time. And from there we have a nakid platform and are unsure what to do.

I'm interested in relatively minimal project/not tons of fab. I was thinking clean and paint and a nice lid. Possibly a roof top tent and possibly a tailgate. Not sure if I want to cut out the tail gate. We could do this really cleanly and have it functional. And not that I ever cross deep rivers but I like the idea of an unmolested M416 and I hear this might be the way to go.

I don't have much time for fab but Damon does this winter (within reason I think) so we could make it semi complex or not. I like the idea of a stand-alone unit with a stereo and all that but am not 100% sold on it and all that work.

Also not sure on suspension. I have some decent 60 series springs outside (and also some coils and matching shocks) that I could do an independent suspension with semi-imitating the AT stuff. Not sure if I am up to the fab for that right now or not. I was thinking SOA but switch to the longer/shallower 60 springs with new hangers to reduce height but still gain a couple inches in the SOA configuration...

I sort of like the stock military tires. I do have some tall skinny 9 x 16 Michelin XL tires around (measure about 36" - huge) lying aorund that would fit on the stock rims. I also have 33 x 10.5 x 15 tires and rims which is what will be on the mini truck that will be pulling it most of the time.

RE color: Damon's BJ42 is tan. My 55 will be white/orange and the mini truck is baby blue. Not sure what color I should paint it. A desert camo might be sort of fun, I dunno... It is important that it "looks cool" as always, LOL...

I'm all ears if you guys have recommendations...

CHeck out g503.org for details on the 416's.. Just a heads up,, I have owned both the 416 and the 614,, the 614 is actually a 416 that was speced out for the usmc instead of the army,, or rumored to have,, dimensions are exactly the same,, unless its a b1,, then it has surge brakes and different hubs..
Your looks to be in excellent shape for its age.. have fun with it..

The trailer addiction spreads.

Call, PM, or e mail me if you need anything I've picked your brain enough about diesels, it's my turn to reciprocate.

My first recommendation would be to upgrade the duct tape on the rear light to Gorilla Tape. :victory:

Just want I don't want to hear :) But anyway very cool. Thank you too Martyn I'll do that, pick your brains! It would be cool to rig a few neat contraptions on it but I need to figure out what they should be. Damon has a dog (and his beautiful new baby) so the trailer would be nice especially if he actually used the BJ :) (he has a FJ Cruiser and a built 100 also :).

A couple gas can and water holders, some sort of compartment for the stove and other than that it should be kind of wide open I think. And again the lid, and this is mostly what I had in mind :)

Cool on the USMC origins fits the desert camo very well too :) I found this thread discussing it from a pretty knowledgeable sounding guy...

It does have the four handles which is cool..

And again the question on the tailgate... We'll see... :)

Sweet!

Keep the springs and do a spring over!

New axle with brakes/wheels and tires....

Then a lid and your set!

Sounds like somebody needs to stop by next time they are in Orem:)

Of course.. That pic of the trailer is actually at my good friend Ken Dalhberg's on about 1200E and 800N. If I'd known.. Our shop is in Heber City not too far away :)

I'm really digging the USMC style paint job SoCalJeeper's tub when he started :)

You thinking of swapping the axle to a 6 lug? Easy to source at Henderson (in stock at their Midvale store). As the predominent tow rig between Damon and you will be 6 on 5.5, it might make sense to swap it over?

Tailgate, I'm 100% behind it. While it sucks to distort such a neat relic, you have to make it usable. The tailgate on my trailer is one of my favorite features, cooking and more important access to the contents while a tent is deployed.

Cool.. Yes considering the 6 lug as well... Good to know on the tailgate, I'm close to sold as well... Now I'm leaning towards back to the fab associated with the imitation adventure trailer suspension. I noticed the M416s seem to be shallower or have a whole lot more room between the tub base and the axle. Not sure if I have this right but seems to leave a lot more room for the arms and associated suspension.

A lot of it (including the longer softer FJ60 springs) has to do with "hauling ***" :)
You guys might remember this thread... http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4804&highlight=hauling

That's where i got my axle...but at the Orem location! Great guys to work with. Around $250 out the door complete with 10" drum brakes.

I agree. The tailgate is one of my favorite mods so far.
