M416A1 Trailer Build

Cruisertoy - no problem. I have three hinges on mine. Looked at your thread. Nice build. My .02 - do not do a SOA and ditch the brakes. My preference is to keep the center of gravity low. Especially if you are going to add a RTT. As you go up, you are more likely to flip the trailer. I've seen a lot of SOA with a lot of weight up top flipped on their sides. As for the brakes, the 1/4 ton trailer is so light it just doesn't need 'em. The Bantam and M416 never had brakes - the m416A1 was the only trailer that upgraded to the surge brakes. Contractor probaly charged the Army an additional $1000 for the mod. With my JKUR in 4 low and the hill descent engaged I can crawl down steep hills without a problem with the 600lb + load. You can ditch the heavy A1 front and bolt a standard M416 lunette mount without drilling - Midwest Military sells a replacemtn 416 trailer lunette mount casting for $175 - http://midwestmilitary.com/midwestmilitary/trailerparts.html Parking brake can be replaced with any rock of log in the field. Of course that's my opinion and am sure a lot of folks will disagree.....

Yeah, I ditched the Surge brake since it was going to require so much money to rebuild. It had already been hacked anyway. I'm trying to clean some 285/75/16 tires that match my 80 series land cruiser. I flipped the axle tonight an will try it out. The nice thing is that it took 30 minutes tops to do the spring over so it won't be a problem to switch it back. Thanks again for the guidance Pat

Oregon Outback

Just returned from a 7 day trip in the Oregon outback. 5 rigs (3 land cruisers/2 jeep JKUR's) - with 2 trailers (mine and a former M716 custom built). After 1500 miles up there my paint job took a beating due to the gravel roads. Landing leg, fenders, axle and front face of the tub are down to the metal in spots. Not sure why the landing leg was so trashed since it is tucked up under the whole time and not really exposed to gravel kicking back.

Thinking of using Monsterliner to cover these vulnerable areas. Anyone used it? Two of the Land Cruisers from our group are covered with another brand of liner and are pretty much impervious to the ravages of over-landing. The trip was incredible. The Steen Mountains were incredible. Had a 'Speed Goat' cross our rig and run parallel to us for a mile or so.
