manual transmission temperature

Hey guys I will be doing a minor transmission rebuild on my xterra the next 2 weekends. I have some oil leaking out around the shifter and it has a very significant burnt smell. I've been doing alot of towing lately and have had some issues with shifting. So I am thinking I over heated it. So I plan to pull it down install a new slave cylinder, centerforce clutch and replace the gasket around the shift. My question is to keep me from doing this again I want to install an electrical transmission temperature gauge. But where to I put the probe? At the bottom where the gear oil will be? Or on the side?

that sounds llike a heck of a rebuild, you should check thenewx.org, a great source of xterra owners. probably someone on there who has done this before.

My 02 has similar symptoms. I cant put a cold drink in the cup holder! and the shifter gets pretty warm. Kinda weird that it doesn't get hot all the time though. I know it will need a clutch soon so hopefully it will hold till then.

Don't forget to take pics.

BTW what the hell do they put on the oil fill plug on the tranny. I was lifting the truck up with a BIG breaker bar and a jack. Wont budge.

I stripped out both plugs. After a while the steel plug bonds with the aluminum case. I've been told use a 1/2" ratchet but if you measure it is almost 9/16". A friend and ex-nissan mechanic told me they make a special tool. But my local stealership has never heard of it. Either way good luck getting them out. We welded a socket extension and a 7/8" nut to get both of mine out.

I probably won't be doing the gauges anytime soon. I was going to rush into it but I decided to take my time and research a little more. Besides winter is around the corner and boat season is almost over.

WHY! something so simple as a freekin plug. A normal service item. I know the front seal in the tranny is seeping. Not alot, but the gear oil needs to be changed anyway. I'm just glad I tried to get the fill plug out before I got the drain plug out! Everytime I have to work on my Nissan I grow a little fonder of my Subaru.
