Mapping help - Software or not?

So we finally figured out our vacation this summer. It will be a two week road trip. Basically leave from Central PA, make our way to the Atlantic City area and head due south staying as close to the coast as possible and camping out where ever possible. Our destination will be OBX for a few days and then continuing on to Myrtle Beach to visit relatives. Afterwards, heading north to Builtmore Estate and taking the Blue Ridge Parkway toward home up to Roanoke, VA.

The question is, do I bother with software on our laptop to map our route? If so, what can I use to develop the travel route and be able to save it?

It sounds like MS Streets & Trips would be a good fit. Very easy to plan asphalt road trips with, and routes are saved with a mouse click. They can be found cheap on Ebay. I bought a new in sealed box copy that was one year old for $10.00 shipped.

I was thinking about that however, I have read that it is not real great at on-the-fly navigation. I was thinking about adding a netbook into the mix.

I found it great on the fly, but I did have a touchscreen setup. Using the pen to scroll or zoom in and out was easy. But if you have a navigator to run the system, you should have no problems. For road travel I used S&T, for trails and such I used Ozi with google satellite images overlay(googlozi). I would get S&T without the GPS module, then buy a BU-353 gps puck to put on the roof while driving.

I picked up an Asus Eee netbook. 1GB of RAM. 250GB HD. Already installed Google Earth. Looking to get S&T soon along with the BU-353 puck. Any other programs I should install?
