Maryland to the Tetons.. Here we come!

Hi everyone, I have been combing all around this site for some time now and have found just tons of information, great ideas and great experiences. So I wanted to share the start to one of my own and carry it through. I am taking this little adventure as my vacation before re-deployment to Iraq at the end of this month. I am an avid outdoors man and always love a good adventure and meeting new people. But I will have my GF Lindsey and her son Aeden (2 1/2) along as well so the equipment and supplies are multiplied. I have been planning and working on a M101A2 trailer build which I will post in the proper trailer section.

I will be leaving out Saturday afternoon (Aug 6th) I would really like to leave earlier but I have mandatory function but no worries it wont slow me down. Lindsey cannot leave until Sunday evening (She is also military and a Irish read head... She may be more dangerous then the Bears we could encounter during this trip). So she will fly out to Chicago and I will meet her there to continue our westward travels. We are heading for Yellow Stone but will not be camping there since everyone is on vacation there but also its just not our style of camping. So the Grand Tetons is our actual camping destination.

We will have about 10 days in the area and we have not planned out any activity list so we can just enjoy the landscape and explore the area. We will visit Yellow stone and its major attractions and hopefully short lines. One perk from this trip is that my Family's farm in Idaho is only about two hours away and although I have heard stories growing up and have seen old pictures it just cant beat seeing it in person. Its a 1,000 acres in Swan Valley just up from the Snake River on a plateau that backs into the mountains. I will also take the time to meet with my great uncle and aunt who are both in their 90's respectively and I am not sure when or if I would ever get the opportunity to meet them again and are the last of my grand fathers siblings.

Our expedition vehicle for this trip is my very recently new to me 2006 F250 Crew cab, FX4 Lariat diesel pickup. It has 210K on the clock nearly 1500 miles in a little over a week of my travel already but it was maintained religiously by an elderly man who who had a camper in the back and travel all over with his dog, so it is fitting that it will server another explorer in nearly the same way. I am glad he kept it so clean and maintained as it really does look NEW inside and out and runs like new as well. The vehicle I had wanted to use but had no time to prepare was my 1988 Grand Wagoneer but it will be ready for the next adventure for sure. Lindsey and I both agree this would have made for a comfortable and iconic adventure.

Well I will keep things up to date as best I can and post about our adventures.

Sorry I have not updated. I am in Kansas City, Mo, currently as we stopped to let the little one play himself to sleep hopefully. I ended up leaving out Monday evening because well things just didn't pan out for the early departure but I got the rack on the trailer and the RTT mounted and its works great as we found out last night in a rest stop in Illinois. So far it is towing great even at high speeds and maneuvers well as we have had to dodge a few cell phone junkies along the way. The power situation is a bit annoying but its my own fault for not really planning it all out and wiring it a little nicer. I topped off both of my yellow Optima top D51 batteries and wired them together in the trailer (pos - pos, neg - neg) Then I tied in the Norcold 704C fridge which is hard lined to the batteries and the Norcold portable freezer chest which plugs into a 12v socket port. I think the wiring (which was leftover stuff in my garage that I knew was heavy enough to handle it but maybe not the best for power consumption) caused my batteries to drain too quickly. But another thought is I remember one or maybe both not being that strong even though my friend has been using it for a few months to start his project truck. So I stopped at lowes and made a 7 way adapter to run from the truck to the batteries and draw from the utility 12v the truck puts out. To error on the side of caution I looked further at this online before connecting it up and its advised as good way to maintain but not to charge from a dead state, I guess I will just need new batteries. On a side note I now fully endorse the dont use your vehicle power for anything as I turned down the fridge but I did not unplug it but it ended up draining my batteries in my truck just enough to not turn over fast enough to start.

On the positive side, the trailer is working out great and gets everyone's attention whenever we pass a vehicle or stop somewhere. vets of all branches recognize the trailer and ask what in the world? This usually gets a good conversation going and many suggestions on where else I should venture while in route.

Nice setup, have a great time and thanks for your service.

Sears sells some pretty decent & cheap battery chargers, ya might pick one up if you find a place to plug in overnight!

Cute kid you two have there. I would suggest hitting the back country office/visitors center in Pinedale or Jackson, WY for some pointers of back country areas to explore. I just returned from that area one month ago and can caution you that the one in Jackson tries to steer you clear of the dirt roads or other back country scenic areas. You have to ask several people there before you get some good information.

Keep us posted.
