I have not tried that particular model, Stephanie. Sorry.
As far as the Mossberg shotguns are concerned, the 500 would be a better choice. There are far more upgrades and modifications possible for that then for an 88. However, if you were shopping for a modification platform, you probably would have gone straight to the Remington 870.
My Mossberg 500 has a longer tube, a modified pump for tactical shooting (very quick slide), and a shorter barrel with night sights. It also has a top folding stock and pistol grip. It can fit 9 shorty buckshot / slug rounds in current configuration. I also have a rifled barrel and the original stock. The firearm can be conpletely reconfigured for hunting in about 10 minutes.
Now, for whats important... these shotguns will jam regularly if you use 3" shells. Use 2.75" shells or shorter. The feeding mechanism only works 100% reliably when the loading port is facing down. Chambering while the gun is upside down or on its side may result in a jam, especially when at high speed. These guns (neither 500 or 88) do not function well when they are dirty or hot. Firing in very rapid succession for long periods will eventually cause a jam. They are not ideal for competition tactical shooting for this reason. They have a somewhat counter intuitive construction and will be difficult to put back together the first couple of times your tear them down.
I still have my 500, I have sold my 88 and my 870. The 500 would make an excellent hunting gun and is well suited to sport shooting clays and such. If you are not sure where you want to go with the build of this gun, I would recommend the 870. If you are going to keep it completely unmolested, I would recommend the 500, but the 88 will do the job as well.
Hope this helps... its late and I tend to ramble when I'm tired.
