Maverick 88 by Mossberg

Yup. I bought one new a couple months ago and absolutely love it, took it clay shooting (hard with an 18.5" barrel!!) and it fired through 100 round without a hiccup. I'd highly recommend it, for the money it cannot be beat.

Thanks Storz,
good feedback.

Keep in mind too, that the 88 interchanges many parts with the Moss 500 so you can change out your 18.5" for a 28" field barrel from a Moss 500 for about $80!

I actually bought an older Mossberg 5500 for sporting clays last week, being able to fire 2 quick shots is key :REOutShootinghunter

The maverick's aren't bad , but the 500 is better, it's worth the little extra in the long run. look at the difference's in the trigger group, the safety and the receiver & finish . Question is do you want the Geo the Chevy or the Caddy

Anyone have any experience with these?

Sorry, must have missed this thread earlier.

I have some experience, and can tell you for certain that they do not fire very accurately when you use two at a time...

I have not tried that particular model, Stephanie. Sorry.

As far as the Mossberg shotguns are concerned, the 500 would be a better choice. There are far more upgrades and modifications possible for that then for an 88. However, if you were shopping for a modification platform, you probably would have gone straight to the Remington 870.

My Mossberg 500 has a longer tube, a modified pump for tactical shooting (very quick slide), and a shorter barrel with night sights. It also has a top folding stock and pistol grip. It can fit 9 shorty buckshot / slug rounds in current configuration. I also have a rifled barrel and the original stock. The firearm can be conpletely reconfigured for hunting in about 10 minutes.

Now, for whats important... these shotguns will jam regularly if you use 3" shells. Use 2.75" shells or shorter. The feeding mechanism only works 100% reliably when the loading port is facing down. Chambering while the gun is upside down or on its side may result in a jam, especially when at high speed. These guns (neither 500 or 88) do not function well when they are dirty or hot. Firing in very rapid succession for long periods will eventually cause a jam. They are not ideal for competition tactical shooting for this reason. They have a somewhat counter intuitive construction and will be difficult to put back together the first couple of times your tear them down.

I still have my 500, I have sold my 88 and my 870. The 500 would make an excellent hunting gun and is well suited to sport shooting clays and such. If you are not sure where you want to go with the build of this gun, I would recommend the 870. If you are going to keep it completely unmolested, I would recommend the 500, but the 88 will do the job as well.

Hope this helps... its late and I tend to ramble when I'm tired.

I wish I had an 88... but only for the safety. I would like to put my pistol grip/collapsible stock on it. On the mossy it makes it impossible to disengage the safety without readjusting your hand. But I will probaly end up just putting the original stock back on.

I have an 88 with a Knoxx SpecOps recoil reduction stock on it, makes it all kinda hard to push the slide lock button, I though about making it the mode of operation to dry fire it if I needed to rack the slide in a hurry, but that doesn't seem safe...
The price was right on the maverick 88, people can trash talk mossberg for being cheep, but the M500 has served in the Navy everywhere I have including Iraq, I don't doubt its reliability :costumed-smiley-007
