These must be pretty rare. I've been dreaming about using a 1017 or 1117 for my dream build, and have searched a bit, but I had became convinced that Mercedes never made 'em in a crew cab. Then today I ran across this for sale in Norway:

Link to the 'for sale' ad.

Looks like the cancer is late stage, and it's a little too new to import into the US, but the price seems good at $6700 USD.

I've seen a lot of 4x4 crewcab (Doppelkabine) mercedes trucks for sale in germany, nearly all from the Feuerwehr (fire service). Anything with current TUV will be in good condition, the testing for TUV is very thorough and many vehicles that fail the TUV in Germnay can be driven elsewhere in Europe and pass the equivalent test with no work.

Here's some to get you started, all on the german motor trading website mobile.de

Well there you are. It's perfect! Damn!
Hunted for a DOKA for such a long time, I wasn't hot on the Mercedes ones because they were so long. As all the fuerwehr and fahrschule ones shown demonstrate. You just lose too much box length.
Now I'm heavily committed to a custom cab extension of probably exactly the length of that Merco, and you go and dig up the perfect solution!
That's just the right compromise, and a good body shop can tart it up, big wheels and you're away.
Almost, you'd have to give it to a horse doctor for a moment; 170 isn't much even by euro standards. A good doctor could get you as many as 250 horses out of that block!

Now what's this story about too young?
Isn't the limit 25 years? In which case you buy it cos it's a rare pearl, sit on it for a couple of years while someone tarts up that bodywork and then the formalities can begin.
Dunno what your southern neighbours say, but you could even ship it and store it south of the border, using Mexican manpower to patch it up.
How much do these formalities cost? The mogs I see your side are just silly money compared to Europe prices., either that's for lining pockets or for the import formalities.

Keep an eye on your pms Lynn; I can think of a solution....

I have seen the firetrucks. But I agree with LukeH, they're too big. If I wasn't several years out from my rig build (and broke), I wouldn't have passed this particular opportunity along to y'all :) I'd be doing as LukeH suggested, storing it somewhere, waiting to bring it home.

Well, I see that the link is broken and the picture doesn't work. I thought I downloaded the pic, but now can't find it.

LukeH, did you happen to grab it?

ADDITED: Actually, the site it was listed on, www.mascus.co.uk, seems to be down...

Lynn you're only making it worse for yourself you know; looking at stuff that's beyond your reach.

Truck porn isn't it?

Yeah, I've been drooling over the truck campers on this site (and the previous expeditioncampers.com) for years. Just haven't got to start on mine. Yet.

Do you have a build thread on yours? Sounds like a project I could really drool over.

Sadly no. I've been thinking about it but my progress is so slow that I'd only end up being harassed for more progress. Lack of workshop space has forced me to keep at a friend's depot, and last year I only got to go and work on it for four separate weeks in the year.
They're intense, exhausting and productive weeks (14 hour days followed by 4 hour meal-discussions with friends) but there are way too few of them.

Some day soon I'll get round to sharing it; I reckon you might just appreciate some of my work.
Cheers
Luke.

You could share it with me via PM or eMail, then only one person would be harassing you for progress and updates. :victory:

Hah! serves me right for being in such a hurry!
Mine was a pole erection unit for a Scottish utility, crane on the back too.
But it was a single cab. That one would almost have been perfect. It's already got the single rears, and bigger tyres than the standard 1*17s

Oh well I can console myself that my Volvo has more horses, is more recent and it's... erm, er...

Damn I can't think of anything else to make myself feel better about my choice!

I guess it's a bit like women: once you've made your choice you should REALLY stop looking at what you could have had!!
