Measuring for axle?

About how much of a gap should i leave between the tire and the box when measuring for a new axle? My other trailer has about a 2 1/2" gap and I'm hoping 1 1/2" is acceptable on the trailer i"m redoing. Tires are 295/75/16 and i dont think i will be airing them down at all. Trailer will be mostly used on dirt roads and logging trails for now. thanks!

I would say 1 1/2" would be just fine. When I built utility trailers for a local company they ran about 1", they never rubbed but they were pavement pounding trailers. However if a tire blew out the flapping tire would often damage the thin cheap fenders we put on.

One thing that comes to mind is that trailer axles dont really articulate very much. On a truck you would have some rubbing issues, but on a trailer not so much.

Just my $.02 (and a bit of rambling)

Thanks. now the hard part of sourcing the axle for the best price. 63" gives me the 1 1/2 per side and southwest wheel has them in stock in the odd lengths. But ABCtrailer has better prices but they only stock even(62") length. guess i have to do some more searching. Thanks again!

Having purchased from ABC myself, I would HIGHLY recommend them. 62" is the stock length, but you can order 1-2" wider for just a $10 upcharge.

I will definitely be buying from Randy @ ABC again. He's great to deal with.
