I was given a Mercedes 5cyl Diesel last night. With the express instructions to do some cool with it. The car is trashed tree smashed it but it still runs and drives. My first thought was this would be awsome in my S10. Our Biggest complaint about my x-cab s10 has been mileage to space it get 12-14 this is sac and 35" swampers. We can pull 15 with out Tahoe and have more space but if i could get 20+ out of my s10.

Now the fun part I know absolutely nothing about them. Is this even a good Idea.

I dont need more projects but hay whats one more
Only have a 03 1500 Im modding for back country and 05 Tahoe thats being made to suit the lady 86 chevy 3/4 ton getting buit and my datsun 521 with a volvo swap all going on right now.

Not really here
It seems like you know what you're doing. I can't tell you how many times I have daydreamed of having a nice diesel in my Montero. I say do it and post up a build thread. :sombrero:

great engine!
parts are not cheap but they run forever depending on which model you have.
The 300D was not a light car so no worries about wgt but it was not a fast car either :)

There some great forums for the older MB's and I think we have a few people around here who know their way around them.

There are adapters available for Landcruiser manual transmissions and also GM manuals, i.e. SM420/465 and NV4500, I believe.

Just here...
Make sure that you have some serious gearing for 4 low. Youll need it. There is no power off idle so gearing will be needed. There are a few running around in FJ40s and I picked the brain of the owner of one. He said it drives alright on the street once it gets into the boost but it seriously lacks on the trails. He said that what has been "very beneficial" was the Orion (4:1 low), deep first and 4.56. Without that, it wouldve been much harder. I dont think that motor would work very well in your truck. Its heavy with big tires. Youre going to need some serious gearing and a very close ratio trans to stay in the boost.

Honestly how do those of you that have done the swap fell the power is. I have rear and read and read on this but no one really says there happy with the power. I am not looking to lose power dont need a rocket ship but dont want to be pased in town either. My truck is by no means heavy. Its a stripped down s10 with 3/4 ton gear and 38s now. I have 4.10 gears 2 transfercases and a old school granny gear 4 speed getting her moving is the easy part but will it stay moving.

I think you have answered your own question. It is not a powerful engine (something like 125hp) but it is a durable engine. An S10 with 3/4 ton driveline, 38's and twin transfer cases isn't light and it won't be fast when your done.:coffee:

Yes but are we talking 6.2 non turbo not fast or are we talking fully loded geo not fast. I have fast but I want to be able to keep up with traffic. I have toyed with the idea of lowering the s10 and going to 33-35 but not sure.

there was an s10 blazer that had one of these swapped in on an s10 forum somewhere. he seemed pretty happy withit. 20-25 or so mpg if i recollect. and in the videos it looked comparable to stock speed and power.

I really want to do this swap but i dont want to lose ground. I would like to gain mileage and have close to the same power.

MY truck stock was 195/250

Give you a rough idea of pickup and power:

There's more on youtube, but I didn't want to post them all here.

Here's some trucks that I assume (I really don't know) are heavier than your S10:

I like this conversion

There's a reason these are so popular for swaps. They are ultra-reliable, and rev high (5000rpm?)

These engines are also found in Hagglunds, driving a fairly heavy vehicle with 4 tracks, and they seem to do just fine (55km/h top speed, in heavy snow)

There's a whole bunch-o-swaps on 4btswaps, OM617 has it own section: http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum...s-OM617-amp-Variants-Sponsored-by-4x4Labs.com
