I took a long weekend to do a little exploring and route planning for a run I'm leading this coming summer. The first part of the weekend was spent with a bunch of friends from a local club. It is a yearly run into South Central Oregon's Christmas Valley. They hit the standard geologic sites, look for a few geocaches, play on the Lost Forest sand dunes, then come back to camp for a big potluck around the fire. I spent the day getting to things I'd wanted to see every time I've poked around Christmas Valley but never ended up with enough time to do. It is always a fun trip, but chilly at night. This year only the first night got down to 30F, and after did not get much below 40F.
After the weekend trip was over I took a couple extra days and poked around Hart Mtn Antelope Refuge, to get some times scoped out for driving distances and see more things I'd not gotten to in the past 20 years. Normally this time of year you could be stopped from doing much exploring because wet turns the dirt roads into nightmares or the snow drifts beyond reasonable travel. This year it was on the edge between dry and starting to get damp, so no dust and great traveling. Temps got to 60F by 10am! No wind. Got to soak in Hart Hot Springs all to myself and enjoy more of the quiet that part of the world excels at.
I didn't take a lot of shots, but I finally got one I'd been wanting for a long time. A herd of Wild Mustangs, one of many that wander the quiet plains of the region. Not technically the best shot, but light was failing fast and I was able to get one off without much motion blur and reasonable noise levels.
Apologies for the poor resizing quality from the album generator. You can click on the image for the original size I yanked out of Lightroom.
