Montero ECM

I'm the new owner of a 2001 Montero XLS, wondered if I could ask some advice. It was a one-owner local truck with 93k, but I bought it knowing it probably had some differed maintenance, and a couple issues.

The dealer (Ford franchise) ended up giving a 50/50% warranty on it for 60 days, so when I isolated some of the issues I brought it back to him for first crack at it.

There were some oil leaks which I isolated, as well as a low idle that caused the car to stall when cold. (ran fine when warm) The low idle was a pretty low priority thing for me, since it seemed to run fine once I got out of my driveway.

So, after staring at it for a day or two, the Ford dealer basically punted, and sent it to a Mitsubishi dealer who is more familiar with the vehicle. (sounds good so far...)

The Mitsu dealer says it's the idle air control unit, and I figured "what the heck, at 50/50 it's probably about the same as DIY". Now he calls and says the truck idles at 2000 RPM now, and the issue is the ECM -- the quote to replace is ~$2k! (so my part is ~$1k)

My BS-o-meter went of a while back, so what do you think, should I let this joker replace it for $1k out of pocket? OR should I seek a re manufactured unit, which seem to be about $275 from a seemingly reputable company. (plus I'd have to get it coded -- assuming this is possible, at a different Mitsu dealer, have a call in to another dealer to verify)

Has anyone else had an issue with an ECU on these trucks? I'm not seeing a lot when I search the interwebs....

Thanks!

(I know crappy first post.... I'll do better next time!)

Oh yes -- ECU part number is MR514089 for the 4spd

I recall reading something about the capacitors in the ECM but don't remember which years it applied to, probably worth a search.
