Montero Sport engine --> swap into Gen1?

Awesome, thanks for the nudge in the v6 direction. I actually read through a lot of your build thread before, not realizing it was the same raider/person. Awesome score on the manual trans. From what I've been researching the nice 88 2.6l body might be getting swapped to the 89 v6 frame. As long as the tree didn't take a toll on that too.

yeah, that seems like a good plan. Just lift the body right off and swap it over. All you really will need to do is change some wiring and ECU out of the smashed one, more than likely. Also would give you a good opportunity to clean up/paint the frame.

I highly doubt there is frame damage, Once you see these frames, man they are beefy as hell. Way thicker steel than on my Sequoia, which is twice as big overall.

I've done this exact swap but not because of a tree but due to a rollover, I think it took 6-8 friends to lift the 4cylinder body off and put it on the V6 frame. There are some differences in body work that make things stupid but nothing major, the main thing is the firewall/bulkhead isn't stamped the same so clearance for the v6 heads is tight (side note, the 3.5 DOHC doesn't clear without sledgehammer work). 4cyl truck also doesn't have an inspection port for the fuel tank sender so i recommend changing the fuel pump and sender while the body is off.

Alternatively, if your 12v V6 is junk you could do a number of other different combos to get a really great truck. The axles and suspension under the v6 are better so i'd run those plus the availability of rear axles with a locker and discs is still pretty good and they're cheap. Lets say you swap the 4cylinder body onto the v6 chassis minus the engine, you could then swap the bellhousing from the 4 cylinder and bolt up a 4G64 from an early Montero Sport. Almost the same amount of horsepower stock but heaps of aftermarket power upgrades and lots of engine space, then there's the 6G74 which will fit the v6 bellhousing and motor mount location. Both are really good engines if you can't find the means to rebuild the old 12v 6G72

Thanks a lot guys, now all I need are some warm days to swap cars around my shop.

...also, since you're a Toyota guy. It's not dangerously hard to swap a Yota engine into it, I helped a friend put a 1KZ into his. I'm putting a 1UZ into mine and another into a different friends. Lots of options.
